You have done a GREAT job - and what a lot of work that is/was - especially lugging all that sand!Thank you both, it was a lot of work but I feel like I have a safe place for them to tuck their heads under their wings to rest now.
Thank youI have a HUGE tree that shades the area the coop is in for a large portion of the day and their run is covered as well. I think I would have been less inclined to use the plastic shed had it been in full sun.
Thank you, I appreciate the heads up on the silkies. I am thinking (hoping) that because they grew up the SFH’s they will want to be with them but I am prepared to make further accommodations if needed.
I knew going in that they needed a little extra tlc but my daughter is good at those puppy dog eyesso here we are. If they choose the nest boxes then they do, I will just have to be extra vigilant about keeping it clean. The things we do for love
.
I am happy that they all get along very well currently. The silkies do seem to remain completely mystified as to how and why the SFH’s take flight so easily and often.
one can always dream! Now just waiting for the broody brats to start up…. Maybe I won’t have any this year!

I still remember that one silkie chickie following that backyard mutt chick she was raised with, who at 3 weeks flew everywhere, well he flew up onto the rail in the run - it was only about 10” high, and that silkie chick was following along and boop up went the one chick, and silkie didn’t even stop to think, she just flapped her wings and tried her best to get up there following him - epic fail! She didn’t even get 4” off the groundYou have done a GREAT job - and what a lot of work that is/was - especially lugging all that sand!. I do hope you end up liking the sand - and will be curious about your thoughts throughout the year (i.e. summer versus winter)
The laugh was for that last bit - the Silkies looking mystified as to how and why the SFH take flight so easily & often!!!
It almost sounds like SFH and Leghorns have a bit in common!![]()

That is so cute. Your chicks growing up together is good. Silkie juveniles will attempt to fly little spurts but as they get bigger start realizing their flight limitations. Some are incredible jumpers too. But dogpiling is their style & the nestbox is a cozy spot especially on cool nights. Otherwise they are very much a chicken in every way. Some SFH pics too plzThank you both, it was a lot of work but I feel like I have a safe place for them to tuck their heads under their wings to rest now.
