Silkie: A Comprehensive Guide to the Furry Chicken - PetHelpful
Yes, but I feel like my thread is over run with silkie lovers. Where are my polish peeps?

How are things @RebeccaBoyd i heard there were sever storms down your way and fatalities with tornadoes
😢😢😢

Hope everything is ok down there with you and your friends and family.
We are good and everyone in my family are safe. Sadly a tornado hit central Kentucky and killed 18 people. Many are missing or in critical condition so that number may continue to rise.

We got torrential rain for a good 18 hours. Thankfully there were breaks in the heavy rain at times so we did not flood. I cannot say the same about both my coops, the run off flooded both chicken coops. I have gutters so the coops should not really flood like they did in their locations, there was just too much rain for them to handle and divert it away from them. Thankfully at least the horse stalls did not get hit.

This has been a rough late winter, early spring as far as flooding and storms go. I do not think it is over yet. I call flash flood season May to middle to end of June for our area.

I guess it was not a total waste with the coops flooding, I needed to gut the coops a 2nd time anyway this weekend for another treatment but it is disheartening. While treating the birds I found 4 of them had bugs. George, Mrs. E, Spooky and Holly. I also realized it was feather lice and not mites going by the egg clusters on the base of the feathers by their vents. Mrs E was the worst so I think she was patient 0. They whole flock got treated and thankfully I found zero sign of anything on the silkies so I cannot blame Davy or Barbosa.

Polish were on my wish list of 400 wanted breeds. But in a zone limiting 5 hens/no roos it became a wee problem cycling thru those wishes. Do you know, we started only wanting two little bantams, either Cochins or Silkies, just as a couple little pets DH chose since he never had anything but a dog or kitty before. Yep chicken math hit but we always kept under the 5-bird limit. Somehow there was never an opportune opening to get two Polish chicks together & they were never offered at the feed store (we learned it best not to get just ONE breed chick by itself).

There was such a popularity over Silkies as far back as the '70's even shown in magazine ads w/celebrities, & when owners discovered their hardiness as well as their cuteness they became easily ready to find here. Besides layer breeds Silkies dominated as a bantam breed even though they are listed in the APA & not the Bantam assn. I think Silkies may even have started the U.S. trend to import rarer bantams & chicken breeds. Crested breeds really took off too. Polish almost went extinct until all those gorgeous European & game birds started getting imported.

Sadly, we'll never cycle thru the remaining 395 breeds on my wishlist 😕
