Been busy filling the garden beds today. Thankfully it's cool enough I can wear my sweater and big hat. Still can't be in sunlight without covering up or I break out in hives. Maybe I'm allergic to the sun.

Got half of the raised beds ready to plant.
Strawberries are happy

Blueberry bush is happy

Grapes on the arbor. Kind of. We were yanking the vines out of the trees.

An empty plastic planter is the perfect chicken toy. Our big coop has one too, they love them.

I tried splinting and bandages for Sweet Coco, but she just pecked it off.

Chickens don't like bandages...I don't think any animal does. I've had dogs & chickens both that would even try ripping band-aids off my own body. Vets have to use head cones on animals that they bandage. Our previous cat had surgery & to prevent her from licking/chewing her stitches loose she was equipped w/a head cone till she was healed. We had a Cockatiel rescue who had picked himself bald so we put a head cone on him till all his feathers grew back normal. We do whatever we can to successfully treat our ill/injured pets.

Whenever we had chickens that had to be Vet Wrapped (bumblefoot or ripped toes), we used white first aid tape to adhere the vet wrap to the chicken's upper leg & kept her in the house to watch that it was staying secure. That first aid tape is a b*tch to remove so our birds gave up pecking at the bandage. We watched that the tape stayed secured &, if needed, we wrapped another strip around anything coming loose. Chickens are stubborn peckers but I'm more persistent than them!

If only you knew what it feels like to have an injured loved one like poor Coco, my favorite Rockette!
She’s strong and smart and tells me when something is wrong. Sometimes she just wants to be next to me and spend the night in the house with me. I have been giving her baby aspirin (1/4 ) dose
She hasn’t lost any weight and her majestic comb is bright red and in full form!

Chickens & gardening! No better joy to share w/family! Love your grape arbor

Our blueberries were in pots side-by-side but apparently they don't like our hot SoCalif climate & were pekid the whole year till they finally died. It pays to plant only within a plant zone area. Tomatoes love sunny hot climates but we once planted some Russian & Hungarian varieties & they didn't do so well here.

Empty hiding spots ~ that's how we discovered recycled doghouses were useful the way you found a way to use a blanket rack as a perch.

I’m truly sorry, but I don’t see Coco wearing a headcone! Not in a 10’1 years

At first, I really thought that way about cones too... till I had to face that it was the best thing for bird or animal. It's amazing after the initial application annoyance the pet very quickly accustoms to the apparatus. Our Cockatiel rescue was climbing around in & out of his birdcage & climbing or flying to our shoulder as if he wasn't even wearing it. Same w/ the cat when we had her in a cone, eating, drinking, walking around ~ she was very mobile. Of course, we kept all ill/injured animals in-house while recuperating.

We have the first chick out and dried off!

And I caught this Robin stuffing it’s beak full of dried grass, best I could get of this wee one. It’s a bit late making a nest.

You’ll need to zoom in - the statue is a turtle that used to actually be a fountain…

Now it’s a paper weight haha.

I have one in the barn that they every so often lay an egg in hahaha! Tomorrow it will get a tomato plant so they’ll need to find another place to hide eggs!

Listen very carefully to me. I need some real help here. I called CeeCee a troublesome hen, and now my rooster has me pinned down! Mr Wyandottey takes no prisoners!
