Next to impossible to get a silkie hen here, and no less than $100 was the last one I saw posted. Not that I want any more.
That's average normal Silkie price here for a DNA-sexed Silkie (available thru private breeders). They're only around $7 to $10 for straight run at our local feed store but only in White color. These little Munchkins are so popular w/private breeders for making money ~ Silkies in multiple colors (also a most popular business are colored egg layers like Marans or EE's/OE's).

Bedtime for the Phyllistines

Bedtime last night was a bit of issue for the Phyllistines. I could see that Niamh wanted to find a new sleeping spot. She was looking high and low for a roost.

Nimue hung with her for a while but decided it was the coop for her and left Niamh on her own. I have never seen them apart before.

Niamh was up on the back of a chair looking for a higher roost.

She decided that I would work and flew over to roost on me.

I, of course, was not going to stand outside all night so she could sleep. Instead I took her back to the coop where she joined Nimue.

I believe she was reluctant to go to the coop because Lady Featherington had kept them out of the run but I can't be certain.

According to PoultryDVM (not necessarily the most scientifically rigorous source) the dose of aspirin for chickens is 5mg/kg given three times a day. So an individual dose of 15mg is probably right giving a total daily does of 45mg.
So yes, she got too much. Not quite double the correct (per PoultryDVM) dose.
However, she will likely be fine.
I found two relevant studies.
- One gave 10mg/kg every day for many days and monitored blood for adverse signs. They started seeing adverse (not fatal) signs on day 3. You only gave it once.
- Another study was looking at aspirin as a feed additive. It is a badly written paper which claims they gave 100mg/kg of aspirin (along with vitamin C) but it may be that they gave 100mg/chicken. Either way it is more than you gave her and their results concluded that all that aspirin boosted growth (it was a broiler study).

So, I think she will be fine. But if you are fretting you could try giving her some activated charcoal which is the treatment for aspirin overdose.

I am glad you prompted me to look it up because in my head I assumed a whole baby aspirin was the right dose!
:hugs
Well thank you so much, RC, for finding the studies, and thanks for the hug. I’ve been working, but checking on Hazel periodically and she’s appearing okay. Hmm,your last sentence too is reassuring, to not be alone in what I thought.

The stress of seeing Hazel’s swollen sinuses and half-closed eye made it not occur to me what I had in my head could be wrong. I was a little pressed for time. And then I wasn’t thinking straight enough to just take the time to double-check the dose I was thinking of even if I was pretty sure. Like a pre-op time-out. I should have done it but didn’t. Lesson hopefully learned.
