Thanks for catching me up. I will keep my fingers crossed for a silver laced Polish chick to hatch and for it to be a girl if it does! The Marans are cute as can be. I truly am excited for you. Even if you do end up rehoming some of them, it’s still fun to watch their antics both the moms and the chicks.

Oh they are cute, and Holly is being a good mama, Georgie is more practical and not so prone to chasing anyone who gets too close, but Holly has been chasing poor Mrs LC and a few of the others. She is good with Mr P’s ladies but some of the others she has been chasing.

I see that the babies are flapping up onto things already! I bet they will be flapping up onto the ledges soon enough! Driving their mamas crazy!

It’s okay so far. He seems to be saying stop herding me, I don’t like it vs I shall peck you into oblivion, you are a huge threat. I think he will chill with some time to grow into his hormones. He’s to little to scare the kids so we will work with him and watch and see how it goes. One day at a time.

Thyme keeps him in line without harming him. I feel lucky it’s worked out as well as it has. I definitely took some risks mixing sizes and two Roos of different sizes as well. But so far so good (knock on wood).

Two of my friends (K and A is what we can call them ) and I are starting a poultry show team this year. We are working on building a coop at school and tomorrow one of my friends and I are buying our show chickens (the other friend isn’t getting hers until next semester.)

My two are the blue polish and porcelain D’uccle, and my friends (A) two are the Jubilee Orpington and black Polish.

I have no idea what breed/s my other friend (K) is going to buy when she gets her chickens, but I am so excited for mine and A’s chickens!

They should be hatching September 29th and we’ll get them a few days after when they ship!

I am so shocked that Dad is letting me buy these chickens, but he said that they will NOT come live on our property… if I no longer show them I am to get rid of them.

I am splitting the cost of shipping with A and she is paying for her birds, so I am paying roughly $65 for these two birds and she is paying roughly $80 for hers, I believe. I didn’t do the math, I am just quoting what I think I heard her say earlier…

We are the first students in our county to start a poultry show team and I am so excited! I really hope that it goes well and that we can compete until we all graduate, which won’t be long… it’s both good and bad that we don’t have much longer in school lol. Time flies.

Anyways, I’ve really wanted a blue polish and a porcelain D’uccle for AGES so I am so freaking happy! Don’t get me wrong, I long my white crested black Polish, but I wanted blue or buff Polish… they only had black ones so I got those. I adore them but I’m so happy I’m finally getting my blue polish!! And I have a golden neck D’uccle but I really wanted a porcelain, so that also makes me super happy! I really wanted a Millie Fleur D’uccle but the hatching dates didn’t align so I went with the porcelain."

She added a addendum to the message:
"A few things changed though. The chicks are hatching September 3rd and my friend is getting a Millie Fleur d’Uccle and her white crested black polish.. not a Jubilee Orpington."

Yesterday’s observations - the Nomads are getting better at reading the Spuds and Hazel, figuring out when they should clear out and when it’s not necessary. Like today I saw they were not very concerned about Hazel dust bathing near them.

I think separating the two groups for special food or treats, which I was doing, works, but then waiting for everyone, mainly the Spuds, to calm down and not be looking for remains helps a lot.

Also yesterday I didn’t bring special treats which the Spuds go insane for and which bring out their hyper-competitive spirits, like mealworms and particularly oats (“Mealworms and oats, or death!” is the rallying cry), and maybe just jacks up the adrenaline.

I put out handfuls of pellets on a couple of cinder blocks, which they really like and for some reason they treat as pretty special and are eager to eat as if they haven’t eaten all day. Why they love this I’m not sure, except it’s a gesture from me, and different from getting it out of the treadle feeder?

So then I waited for them to thoroughly check out both cinder blocks and to put their minds on to something else….At least that’s what I tried yesterday. All was calmer.

The Nomads relaxed on the end there, one lying down, one drinking, and notably Isabel was eating peacefully from the yellow chick feeder in the back. Hazel and Tedi see them, but they don’t see them eating anything they “gotta have”, and they still have some of their own pellets left in a special place to pay attention to if they want.

Felt Isabel’s crop before this, and it felt pretty good! A firm unshelled walnut size crop, small half golf ball. Very similar to the other Nomad’s crops, just a tad smaller. Yay!

That is great news. I love a full crop.
