Thanks! Could it be harder to tell with Buckeyes? Pea combs and small wattles….I don’t know at what age one can tell definitively with Buckeyes. They are 12 weeks old now. She’s got the biggest and reddest comb of all of them. I’ll try to get a better head shot. I was focusing just on the feathers…I read with purebred Buckeyes one might be able to go by the rows in the pea comb, that Roos have three distinct rows. Don’t know if that’s true but these can’t be purebred anyway, they are from Cackle.

Nothing as heart warming as your chickens wanting to spend time with you and hopping up for visit/warm lap/snooze/preening party...or just to tell you of their day!

Speaking of that, how are things going with Diane-ida??? Hoping no back-sliding with the new chicks around - and someone else who might steal your attention!?!?!?!?

Splash copper marans cockerels, youngest are 3 months and the older is 5 months.
My dad scared off a hawk that had landed in our yard earlier. All the birds had hidden away thank goodness.

Nice trade. If you wanted a project this fall, Pen the oldest boy up with your remaining black copper girl. The resulting chicks will be blue. Blue Copper Marans are also lovely birds.

Tomorrow I'm going to get some new pictures. I have enough mobility in my arm now that I can properly hold my camera without my arm hurting. I do have to wonder how heavy it is though. I tried picking it up with my right hand and there was some tenderness associated with that.

I have had multiple cuckoo marans - and I agree they aren't as laid back as the BCMs I have had - I have never found them to be bullies. Not quite as large as my BCM (but still good sized), a bit more 'active' within the flock (i.e. a bit more assertive), but none have been bullies - not in any way. Granted, I have only had a few (3 100% Cuckoo marans, 1 which was a rooster - a GOOD rooster), and I have had multiple that were mixes - offspring from either the hens or the roo...with someone else. Basically, barnyard mutts what were wonderfully diverse and great hens in their own right.

All I can say is: each chicken has it's own personality - but my experience is that cuckoo are friendly, intelligent, and 'in command', but in no way bullies/meanies.

Yep, I would've loved a sweet Cuckoo Marans but ours was obnoxious ~ picking on a sweet timid Partridge Silkie till almost all her feathers were chewed off by the Marans & who picked fights w/ our nice White Leghorn who didn't put up w/ the Marans & put the Marans in her place. The Marans however harassed both our Silkies but picked on the more timid Partridge Silkie the most. The Silkies learned to pal around w/ the Leghorn for safety.

The innocent-looking Marans culprit Tish ~ she didn't care for humans either.

Damage was done to the Partridge Silkie Violet ~ the Black Silkie Mini managed to avoid most of the Marans bullying but Violet went bald plus all her outer feathers & tail had been pulled out & only underdown remained. We thought she was moulting but caught the Marans cornering & harassing her. After we saw the Marans cornering Mini too we rehomed the Marans to our friend's layer flock who was more than happy to have the occasional brown Marans eggs & where bigger layers kept the Marans in her place!

Mini ~ & Violet was bald w/ outer body/tail feathers gone.

A few weeks later after rehoming the Marans Violet got her plumage back.

Our next Cuckoo bully was a large heavy 7-1/2 lb Cuckoo Breda Fowl who kept singling out 2-lb Violet to bully. Our wonderful cuckoo Dominique trio rushed to protect Violet & kept the Cuckoo Breda in her place but after losing the Doms down to only one Dom left the Breda got bold about bullying Violet again so the Breda was rehomed finally to a friend's farm. She's ok w/humans...
& apparently ok w/dogs now too...

They are so pretty! I love BBS variety in birds. They've always been my mellowest chickens
