When you look fabulous but that one piece of hair will not lay flat:

Today, I let the flock free-range in the yard. Chervil, the queen of charm, always hops up when I chicken sit and says hi. After a quick headcount, I turned to head inside, but the whole gang trailed me like, “Hold up, don’t go!” Laughing, I turned back to chat with them, and Chervil locked eyes with me, calculating her move. Before I could blink, she launched into the air, spun like a feathered ninja, and landed on my shoulder, facing forward like we were about to adventure together.

I stood there, stunned. Chervil? She just sat there smug and perched like royalty. The other chickens clucked below, probably jealous. After a minute, I leaned down, she hopped off, and strutted away like it was no big deal. These crazy chickens still surprise me, Chervil’s my Halloween jump scare! 🤣

Try it... see what happens. Cooler nights maybe it's warmth they're looking for. Our old Dominique Dana sleeps on a perch leaning against the window of the coop... for balance so she doesn't fall or... ? She's the only standard chicken on a perch... the 5 Silkies huddle in nestboxes or dogpile in really cold weather.

Silkies pile up and/or use nestboxes w/straw

I piled it up today when I tended the coop. I don’t think it’s for warmth, as they will also dog pile when they want, and being Buckeyes they aren’t as sensitive to cool nights, more to warm ones. In fact I opened the HC tray under them again a few days ago when I saw Shehnai panting a little, and I think it was 63F in the coop then.

It’s been very warm here also, tonight I put the fans on for the horses, it’s rather humid and no real breeze.

It’s 71F in the Hen House quite mild for this time of year.

It doesn’t surprise me your kiddos are also warm. They should be getting ready for winter cold, yet it’s still warm. This is why my horses are finding it hot, they are getting their winter hair coats.

Of course I am not complaining as you all know I detest the winter cold.

The Polish duo received a couple hrs of scratching around this afternoon, in Lulu’s stalls - they were digging and scratching, running and flapping about.

It was wonderful to see them doing so well, and it makes me more sad I was not able to get the other two also.

They don’t seem very bothered by me, they were more interested in the bugs and spiders.

Sure hope they are both pullets. I put them at about the same age as the Noirans maybe a week older.

Is that sweet Orp face the biting Diane?
Yes indeedy! But I know her expressions and sounds…none of those are her sweet face.

This is Diane The Intense. Big crazy eyes. She’s hyped up from immediately confronting me looking for a fight but backing off when there were no hands within biting distance. So she’s pacing around, not sure about the phone out and me crouching talking sweet talk. It all sounds like a trick!

This is Diane Ida-Biter Angry Face: Oh it IS a trick! No I’m Not Turning My Back To You, Quit Trying To Get That Thing Behind Me, I See You, And Beak Is Armed!

This is Diane pacing again and keeping an eye on me and giving me a piece of her mind but thinking maybe this is a big nothing burger and a waste of time

That was a great progression - loved it!

Yes indeed. And that is why I called them the great blueberry wars.
Mr. Chips grabs blueberry out of Calypso's beak --> Calypso pecks Mr. Chips --> Mr. Chips squeals like he is being murdered --> Tassels beats the crap out of Calypso for hurting her special boy.
Rinse and repeat!
Entertainment comes easily with babies about.

Was just calculating the age of the chicks here:

Noirans - hatched 11 Aug 2025 are approx 7 weeks old
Silkies - hatched 29 Aug 2025 are approx 4 weeks old

I would put the new Polish chicklets at 7 weeks, and that is what I will be going by to estimate gender. Sure hope they are pullets...
