I am not sure I have internalized all the pros and cons, but my gut says go with the far apart option because you want to create as much separation as possible.
I am still optimistic that with time it will all settle down, but in the meantime giving Hazel as much distance as possible feels like the best thing to do.
Because they go to bed at roughly the same time, I'm also thinking that far apart is best. Hazel won't have to get close to Shehnai's roost to get to her own. Day before yesterday Shehnai came running back out after he saw Hazel come into view!
If you went with #3, you would only be moving 1 coop/run, correct? Keep the divider between the main run and the extension and call it good.

Re: Shehnai seeing over the striped barrier....I've heard (but never tested) that deer won't jump over a fence if they can't see the landing. Shehnai may be tall enough to see over it, but it looks like he can't really look DOWN to see the ground right in front of it. If Hazel isn't concerned with him peeking over, I would speculate the stripes are high enough to be working.

I don't know that making the area equal sized is really all that important. You're still working on full integration, right? The extension is supposed to get finished no matter what you do? Move the 1 coop ro open into the main run, finish the extension and keep the door between.
Right now both coop/runs are not yet connected to either the Main run or the partially finished Extension, they both got moved to make way for the extensions and to excavate. The big coop is close by and the small coop is on a flat part of the hill above. So both coops will be moved to connect.

Yes the extension will be finished no matter. Should be done enough in a few days, tarp on top. Whether a solid roof instead of tarp on the connecting Main run gets done before it's too cold isn't clear.

Yes, I am aiming for full integration. I like #3 for the separation of coops and space for both groups when they are kept from mixing. I think about space because it's not clear to me how soon that will be. Certainly looks a long ways off right now.

I am hoping Hazel will relax and Shehnai will eventually figure it out, take a cue and mostly leave her alone, while finding his brooder mates more fun. Maybe he can win over the BO's too.

Shehnai has been letting his pullets eat a lot of whatever it is while taking some himself too, they are following his lead. They got sardines a couple of days ago, I showed their dish to him first and he grabbed a big chunk right away and made off with it to eat, but then mostly let the pullets eat, again while taking some bites, he was more sure of it than they were. He didn't scarf it all down like he could have though, and the pullets came back to it for the next couple of hours.

She’s a beauty! Poor Chickie - chick’s beard has been stripped off by someone over grooming her! I am hoping she will moult soon and regrow her beard again.

Enjoy the Apple festival ♥️
Thanks, Pony. I haven't realized that her beard is that bad. I haven't done anything to it, not even brushing it. Perhaps it's the side photo that makes it look that way. If I get a photo of the front, maybe it will look a bit different.

Chook trouble this morning. I took Blue back out to the coop. She decided no way, and flew down off the rafters, out the door and followed me back into the house. In the coop I noticed that I have six barred birds not five anymore. Jalapeño from next door was inside with my barred rocks, just comfortable as can be.

This mix and match neighborhood is making me crazy. 🤪

Hello friends,
I missed you all! I got so busy getting ready for my big faire in July and then was so behind... Any way, busy summer.

We are minus one, plus one in the cat department. We lost our oldest Puff in a horrible and tragic way, to a dog attack. 😞

Another neighborhood cat has adopted us, she is a funny older girl that wants constant physical contact. Not that we needed more cats! There are currently 7(! 🙀)I consider ours.

In chicken news things are same as ever. Rosie screamed all summer as usual and laid at least three eggs a week April-last week. Pretty good for an 8 year old lady!
Between her and the speckles we got 2-3 eggs every day. Rosie and Alinta each had a broody spell, but only one each.

There is no way I will catch up with all I missed (at least not soon) but i will try and pop back through the synopsis posts. And I will try and pop in more often.

I really, REALLY love apples. I used to do enough orchard work to keep up a supply of free apples for about half the year and now I live somewhere it's really difficult to grow them and only rubbish supermarket apples are available to buy. I'll be looking forward to this but might also hate you a tiny bit :)

So lovely to hear from you, very sorry to hear about your moggy 😢

Dog attacks have been a bit chatted about this summer.

As always love seeing your beautiful flock:
