So cute... DH & I liked the crowing that said
"all's well to come out, girls!" One roo must like his echo inside the coop ~ it seemed to get the inside coop girls motivated enough to finally leave

I noticed the cinder blocks in your yard ~ perches? food bowl or water bowl placements? or....? We used ours to make benches, plus the hens snooze under them too.

Cinder blocks: started as a "windowed" windbreak on the south side of the original door. Then moved to inside the coop to lift feed/water up so the couldn't fill them with scratching. Then moved back outside as assorted seats for me or them. When they're covered in snow, they're cold. However, sun warms them, so the snow clears from around them quickly. They get drifted about as I turn them for bug access.

Good ideas... we also turn things over for insect access. The hens follow me around the yard in hopes I'll turn something over

The littles have graduated. Mama hen flew up to the high perch, and one by one the littles found their way up to perch with her. I imagine that mama will be ditching them soon. It was very funny to watch, but I didn’t have my iPhone to take pictures of them. Dakota had it in my room watching “Scary Movie 2” on a movie channel.

Give it time, I saw a baby silkie scarf back a beetle the size of her head remember!

Meanwhile I’m impressed it’s cut in half - that’s hard work!

It was actually an easy cut. I used my machete, and utilized lots of pinned up anger

Quick Update

I hate seeing them moult, esp so late in the year. The cold weather just makes it harder on them. I’ve been closing up the Hen House at night to help keep it a bit warmer, I’ve had the barn doors closed since last week. There was too much draft in the barn, even the horses appreciate it being a bit warmer at night, they are elderly and the cold bothers their arthritis.

The old hens also appreciate it a bit warmer, I am sure their old joints also ache.

Time I went and put the wall sitters to bed…. Missing a few there in the Hen House.

It it can be so unfair at times, we do everything possible to keep our pets healthy and then something like this happens. It’s maddening, but it’s also the way of Life.


But, where there os life there is hope, so I hope and pray good thoughts.

Sorry, but couldn't help but laugh...door sitters . They are apprentices in the TSGoA (Tree Sitter's Guild of America)

My tree sitters - since the rest of the pines (what didn't fall) in the run had to come down - have started sitting on the 9' high fence of the 'safe run' or on what used to be the 'canopy' and ramp area for the crushed double decker coop. That is a 6' high 2 dog-run kennel panels attached at an angle with roosts inside (2) and a metal 4X6 steel frame across the top & covered with a tarp. Will they roost on the accessible roosts? No (only two!). The rest roost on TOP of this ensemble - and NOT on the edge, either...so difficult to get them. I have to get a 2 step stool out to be able to reach them! Dirty buggers!
