I am interested to see the end product. It’s a beast to move those big pallets - cutting it is a great idea!

That sounds like a great idea - please let me know if they like the smaller 1/2 pallet.
I have so many chickens, that one that small wouldn't be enough even with two. I am planning, when I make mine with a large pallet, to put 2 handles on each side, so hubby and I together can move it relatively easily.

Me too... I would like pics ...we have 3 pallets & they are heavy. Nice if we can make shelters w/them. I wanted them in the run but they are a bear to move so shelters sound like an idea.

None of our Silkies ever got bumblefoot but our Dominiques did ~ but not from coop perches ~ our perches were padded w/ Ace stretchy bandage wraps. They got bumble instead from snoozing/perching on raised garden bed stone borders & perching on sandbox raised cedar edges!

I started noticing issues when my girls were using some higher perches out in their pen, where they had to jump down. I did some reading to see what could be causing it and that was one of the suggestions. When we removed them, I stopped having the issues. Like I said, it was my heavier birds.

Marans get the nickname "mareanies" because they tend to boss others around. Mine haven't seemed that mean? Top of the pecking order for sure but they don't like, chase the others for no reason. They aren't super friendly but they will crowd the fence for treats.
Honestly, the majesty marans (barred rock marans cross) are SO soft. Shep, and now Squatch, have the feather shred gene and it makes their feathers kitten-soft. I can usually get a quick pet in when I shine the light at night for Squatch to go to bed, it's our little bedtime ritual.

I'm tickled you noticed the softness of the BR crosses' feathers. Pilgrim Dominique feathers were used for bedding not just for their softness but also the feathers had less odor. Our Silkies also have less odorous & naturally softer plumage.

BR's have Dominique-cross history during very early 1900's so they have mostly the same characteristics of the basic Dominique stock ~ good temperament, softer feathers, calm demeanor, & people~friendly.

Now, we had a mean bully Cuckoo Marans so I can't speak of what a BR/Marans cross would be... kind of a wait-n-see outcome?

Not sure who Andrew is... but as for DH, he did the costumes on his own. Mostly stuff from thrift stores!

Now if they can just pick up the manure fork and push the wheelbarrow, clean up the stalls and roost ledges, sweep the floors…. Well that would be grand!

Midnight Majesty Marans are a hybrid BC Marans Roo on BR hens.
