Is pain the only reason they stop eating/drinking? The only 2 birds we had that stopped nourishment were our two Mareck's cases, which were not going to survive anyway. Never has our vet prescribed or suggested pain meds or aspirin ~ metcam or electrolytes is as close as he ever got to suggesting anything.

All other birds we had that died ~ ate/drank up to their last hour. Even Mini who had ovarian cancer was running foraging around the yard like normal till I saw the stuck egg on her vent & rushed her to the vet where he tried to remove the egg that adjoined the bleeding ovary/tumor. She was bleeding like nothing was wrong but she would have bled to death & he euthanized her. He was as broken up about it as I was cuz he had saved her life so many times before but couldn't then .

That's very sad.

Sir Shirley (née Surely) has three lovely chicklets, one is a definite cockerel and is named Shirley Jr.


And if anyone has any ideas as to this colour that would be great..

Poor Buffy. She's looked like this for weeks now. I've never had an elderly or molting hen, is that normal?

What did she look like before her molt? What kind of chicken is she?

That's very sad.

Yes, it was.

Mini was from a private breeder who brought several Juvenile Silkies to sell thru the feed store 13 yrs ago before strict biosecurity awareness was put in place. We went to buy a Partridge Silkie female to pal around w/our Silkie Violet ...but we fell in love w/ sweet all Black Mini instead who was quite content to be hand-held.

Her health issues christened us into the multiple vet visit world. We bought her for $10... but over her nearly 7 yrs, that's about what each one of her eggies averaged out from all the vet costs I think she spent more time in-house always recuperating more than all our other in-house recuperating hens combined.

One of her 2014 eggies which should've been an alert to us of future issues w/ her health.

No wattles yet…. I would put her at the same age as the Noirans. 11 Aug 2025 so 14.4 weeks old.

the Barred Rock is a pullet I am sure and is name Jolene,

and the little black pullet has no name yet, but the owner wants to stay with ’J’ names - not Jessy though.

And seems chicken math has got them hard! They have hatched out anotjer batch of wee chickies. There is another splay legged chick they are working on.

When I left there was another egg pipped in the incubator

Isn't it late to be hatching chicks? How old will they have to be before they can go outside?

How about Jazz/Jazzy or Jade? (I know she isn't green, but I bet as an adult she will have a green sheen!). She seems to be a curious one

She's a buff orpington, 6 or 7 years old.
This was end of August, she's been getting rattier since then
