Someone is missing…..

Now I will have to get my winter gear back on and go to the barn and find Petra, I really need to get these chooks trained to go to bed!

After a 10 minute search of the whole barn I remembered seeing her fly up on the beam were Tippy likes to go, sure enough there she was.

Got her down, she ran to the Hen House and I put her to bed.

And now I can also get some sleep. Good night all!

This little turnip got a toenail caught in the door to the tall coop and ripped it off...poor lil dude. View attachment 4266815
Pics inside spoiler, I was shocked seeing the blood outside the pen at lock-in

He got blood all over my sweater but he's going to recover. I only saw the toenail injury but those things bleed like crazy.
Oh no! I always have blood stopper on hand, and it works amazing!
Poor boy! Hope he makes a good recovery!

Remember way back when - back when I first got him? The first time I grabbed him up and he screamed the place down, and Marty tried to kill me????

It wasn’t as bad as that thankfully!
😆

I’ll have to find that story again. This time it was Mr LC having a go at me!
Mr Pompeii has good friends that worry about him.

I would love to learn more about your insulated waterers. I have one 5gallon bucket with horizontal nipples that stands on a metal warming plate governed by a Thermacube - so only comes on when temp gets close to freezing. The plate is only 30W, so less than a light bulb, but keeps that bucket liquid very well.
In addition I have hanging waterers that of course freeze, so I keep one inside and trade it out for the one outside 2-3 times a day when it is really cold.
I am wondering if an insulated waterer might reduce my trips back and forth trading out the frozen water.
I'm guessing at when the power to the run was cut: I think about 10am; before 11 am at least. The insulated waterers were both okay at 3pm though one had an icicle forming under the little trough/"beak".
I got the ones I have at Premier One. It's way more wattage than you have though - 100 watts. I have the older model and the new model. They each have nice long cords. I set them on upturned 3-gallon buckets, but they can hang.

  • Lid is secured to the base via unique interlocking tabs
  • Conical lid shape to prevent birds from perching and soiling waterer
  • Insulated lid traps warmer air inside waterer
  • Handle can be used for both carrying and hanging
  • Detachable 16' electrical cord for more flexibility without using extension cords. If you must use an extension cord, use a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord that is rated for a minimum of 1 amp (100 watts) continuous draw.
  • Built-in thermostat turns heating element on at 40°F and off at 60°F. Note: Water in the basin does NOT get hot, nor even warm. Rather, the thermostat keeps the water from freezing.
  • BPA free plastic
  • Ducks can drink from this waterer, though we periodically offer water in a rubber pan so they can submerge their heads

I really feel bad handling him. It’s so sad! None of my other chooks are terrified of me, in fact the opposite, after being here so long I would have hoped he would at least tolerate my picking him up.

Poor fella.
Poor you as well. I've never had one scream like that. :hugs :hugs :hugs

Happy Monday
Geronimo up on the step-ladder tree (her favorite spot).
When I took the food into the next run she flew from the ladder to the day-perch in the next run.
She is still a serious flying chicken that one!

The perfect chicken for you. 😆
