Teamwork

So this just happened

I walked out of my office to get a cup of tea. I looked to the living room from the kitchen and I saw 2 chickens in the house. I got my cup ready and I noticed Niamh walk across the dining room to the backdoor. I thought maybe she wanted out so I went around the peninsula and headed to the door.

As I arrived at the door, Niamh turned around and headed back to the living room. At the door, wanting to come in, was Éowyn.

Niamh had gone to the door so I would see the cat and let her in.

They are working together now!

There is no hope for me. :th

I am eager to see how this new alliance flourishes, never underestimate ones animals they are just as smart as we are!

Poor Hattie! Mites can get bad on an older hen, one with other problems, I've heard it seems to be worse for them. Did you check the others to see what's going on with them?
Today I was wondering when I'll see mites again, since we had that warm spell. It'll be a real pain to clean out and treat both coop and run now, and a spray would freeze, right? I'd be tempted to wait for warm weather again, when the eggs would hatch, and just treating everyone to beat them back, bringing inside, with spray (& drying them), or powder (unless you've got resistant mites).
The weather is too rough to treat everyone right now. Either tomorrow night or Saturday.

That is too funny. What brought this on. :gig:lau:gig:lau:gig:lau
Your post about Niamh having Tilly roosting in the grapevine soon. It made me think: "That Niamh is a wild child - Bob will have his hands full this spring" and the song just popped!

I am way behind, it's been a trying few days with the changeable weather, yesterday's snow (over a foot of heavy wet stuff) meant I had to use the new snowblower and clear the driveway and all the way to the barn down to the road - my usual person who clears the snow (my younger niece) is swamped at her work and unable to drop by. Clearing that snow even with the snowblower was horrendously hard work. But I did it!

To make the day passable, the weather was as nice today as it was miserable yesterday. Once I cleared the snow I dug out the paths to Mount Poopmore for the chooks and they were able to get out and about, it was around +2C no wind and sunny - very pleasant for a February day. Tomorrow promises to be another miserable day with freezing rain and rain. The weekend looks dismal, but hopefully the chooks can get out a bit again, as long as it isn't snowing or too windy and it gets above freezing they are good with going out. I just have to keep an eye on anyone who tries to 'fly over the snow and goes plunk into it!'. Petra is flying demon! She flies almost as well as Mr and Mrs LC do.

OK everyone have a lovely evening!

Pear (Partridge Rock) is the oldest hen. Cheetah (Gold Penciled Hamburg), Nellie (Brown Leghorn), and PITA (White Sapphire aka Splash Leghorn) the next oldest, with Storm (Splash Laced Red Wyandotte x Olive Egger (Cuckoo Marans x Cream Legbar)) a few weeks younger.

The next year's additions still here are Primula and Belladonna (Dark Brahmas) and Mera (Speckled Sussex). A few weeks later, Whiskey (bitsa, Wyandotte mixed with another mix), Pippa and Maizie (Buff Orp x EEs), and Lark and Indigo (Hamburg x White Sapphires).

The following spring/summer, Tuff (son of a Hamburg x Brown Leghorn and either Pippa or Maizie) joined the crew. He brought Enigma (Whiskey? X Colombian Wyandotte), Shan (Hamburg x Dark Brahma), Chia (Hamburg x Golden Wyandotte), and Havoc (Buff Orp/EE bitsa). Storm hatched out Cumulo (her daughter by Whiskey), Nimbus (her daughter by Black Australorp) and Cardhu (Whiskey x Partridge Rock).

Took a year off from cockerels and gained Kate and Jane (Rhode Island Reds), Blurr and Focus (Barred Rocks), Hetty (Black Australorp), and the "Bucket" ladies, Rose (Buff Brahma), Daisy (Light Brahma, Hyacinth and Violet (Silver Laced Wyandottes).

The junior additions will be a year about July 4 and consist of Jax (Bielefelder mix), Hawthorne (Blue birchen some sort of fancy hybrid), Tundra (a Colombian lightly foot feathered designer higbrid mix), Koonj (Hamburg x Mottled Houdan x one of the blue designer hybrids), and Arabel, Mortimer and Matilda (all some sort of mix of the designer hybrids, based upon their small size, related some how).

PITA, Nellie, Lark, Indigo, and Koonj all lay white eggs (Cheetah theows white). Pippa, Maizie, Storm, and Arabel lay green eggs (Arabel the incredibly dark green, so any of the designer hybrid boys could throw green, as could Tuff). The rest lay shades of brown.

Flock queen is Storm. Current top Roo is Tuff with Mortimer acting as his lieutenant. Pear will be 6 the end of July.

How come I missed Mortimer - great name! But I was totally unaware of him!

I am hoping Mr P will train up Gomer as his lieutenant.... Mr P just chases the other two roos away - Clyde is terrified of him and runs away, but Mr LC and Mr P get into some dandy brawls, and Mr LC is not above ambushing Mr P - what a sneaky brat!

My vet told me she has a client who has 4 identical black cats. Apparently it is so her husband believes they only have one cat!
You could try that strategy with chickens.
This ought to be part of the calculations in Chicken Math. Two or more identical (un-named) chickens count as one?

I used horse bug spray which worked great. And it's easy to spray on the shavings and the roosting ledges. But I only do it when I can open up the barn to air it out, not worried about it freezing, but don't want the smell to linger too long.

Anywho it got rid of those lice fast - within an hour the lice were dead on them. Mr P and the Azure where loaded, their feathers has lots of egg clusters which I picked off in the even after they went to roost - picked them up and brought them to the office and combed through their feather with my fingers for the egg clusters.

two weeks later I sprayed them again, and I did it a third time just for good measure. Have seen anything on anyone since.

This was the creepy crawly I found which has got on me after handling the Azure!

And a couple of feathers with egg clusters at the base of the feather, from Mr P and Marty I think

Did those feathers fall out and you found the egg clusters, or how did that work?
Ignorant newbie here.
