Congratulations on making the most absurd statement in the history of the internet.

Umm...hold on. Medicine Man, I appreciate your concern on everything here. There are a lot of things many people don't know about DDT. I still believe that it is a nasty chemical but, it has saved lives. The problem with DDT is that people never applied it properly as with most other chemicals with homeowners being some of the worst offenders. DDT has caused the near extinction of many species, namely birds. Though I am glad we no longer use it here in the U.S., it did save a lot of people. So, Jim, is not making an absurd statement. People in other countries where malaria was a problem had no other way to combat the insects. Once outlawed in 160 countries, many people did die as a result. To my knowledge, DDT has killed few people as a result of direct exposure. I am no expert on this chemical but, from a human health standpoint...it may be a tossup. Malaria or Cancer...take your pick. Despite mother nature's attempts to keep our populations in check, enough of us survive to maintain causing the problems we do!

Also, one more thing to clarify. Because of the way DDT was applied and directed for use, it killed waaayyyy more than the target species, mosquitos. It has been however used in effective ways to control mosquitos in homes where the exposure to it has been minimized. It still kills non-target species though. Just like our farming practices, it was the best thing currently known and unfortunately still is for many countries. It is still produced and used in several countries.

Absurd you say? Read the following to understand the opinion of others that think your head in the sand view is absurd.

They have created a GM Mosquito that will wipe out Malaria. There will no need to use DDT for Mosquito control in the future, (hopefully).

Perhaps there are other ways that haven't been discovered yet, but until we discover those ways we have to work with what we've got. I don't agree with everything Monsanto does, but they are often unfairly accused by people who just read the articles slamming them (there are plenty out there) I'm not saying thats anyone on here, but I've been through this discussion on several forums.

There are other ways...first and foremost would be to simply distribute food. We've never really, truly done that. The issue of famine is one of distribution, not supply.

Other ways maybe, but most are not efficient enough to feed the world.

If we don't distribute food to those who need it, it doesn't matter how much we grow - or how we grow it.

If we don't destribute it then how does it get from my farm to someones dinner plate across the country?

I think this gives you a nice summary of the problems which affect distribution of food resources. The hungry in the US are generally impoverished and unable to afford quality food. In other countries, there is little access to food becuase of regional instability, natural disaters, politics, wars, and the overall poverty and inability of the nation to support the infrastructure needed to provide the distrobution and production of food. GMO's, good or bad can't solve most of this.
