Gotta have treats!

I read somewhere on here that they cook it in the winter and give it raw in the summer. I give mine raw and they flip out. DH cooked it for them one time and they flipped out! I don't think they care!

Cool I have plain rolled oats that I cook with maybe I will try those this week to see how they like them. So far they have tried everything but the hard boiled egg still remains the all time favorite.

Since 2 days old, my girls started with finely chopped broccoli tops. Now they eat the stalk and all and charge to the door looking for their treats...and boy do they know what TREATS are!

I do extra grocery shopping for my girls to last the week, giving treats everyday! Sounds silly but worth it to me.

For Breakfast -
2 cup rolled oats
1 whole Apple, cut into wedges ( I have a young Apple Tree growing in the yard)

In the afternoon after 5pm -

2 slices of 100% Whole Wheat Bread broken into pieces
Raw Broccoli Spears - stalk and all (I mix Cawliflower and Carrots in sometimes)

Then some mealworms, dry cat food or a juicy lizard to fight over and play tug of war...sorry that was gross! LOL!

Of course they have Chick Starter available - All Day (I mix in chick grit a couple of times a week)
Nutra Drench Vitamin added in their gallon water jug since Day 1

Love this thread! Just got my first "babies" April 12th and since I didn't know any better, they went outside for a little while the first sunny day and got their first taste of grass and their first treat: crane flies! omw, that was fun to watch, those suckers are all legs so 5 chick could go after it at once. we did the mealworms, grated apple, egg yolk, mushed banana, wheat toast, and premium beef canned cat food (the shredded kind), etc., but the only way I got them to eat yogurt was to sprinkle orange jello powder and ground rolled oats on it, then it was all hands on deck! we had given them some earthworms, but then I read somewhere that they can get gapeworm from them(?) so now they are off the menu.
Also, they always prefer anything from the fingers over anything on a plate.

Curious - my husband told me you shouldn't give them tomatoes or potatoes because they are both from the nightshade family and that was poisonous?

My 12 chicks are just over 5 weeks, they like meal worms (canned ones is all I can find) But they also like pasta noodles, any kind. I cook a few, chop them up add dry rolled oats and dry corn meal, place it on a cookie sheet and they go nuts for it. Long spagheti noodles works too and fun to watch them chase each other for it. They truly are hilarious to watch. I give them a treat of this almost every day in the morning and it doesn't seem to affect their normal eating habits of chick feed.

I tried the oats and I have to say definitely not a hit. They tried them of course and thought they were okay but not nearly as good as some of the other treats they have had. Guess we were bound to strike out at some point and time so far that's the only thing they haven't really liked as much.

I hadn't thought about broccoli tops I will have to give that a try. I love letting them find new things they love to eat. It is so much fun checking in with everyone and finding out what everyone has had good luck with. I think cottage cheese might be the next thing to try.
