I have been getting a few wind eggs lately white and brown. I think its this last bag of food i bought them. They dont even like it. It was cheaper and at a different store.

It would be great for those on a diet if we could make chickens that only lay no yolkers. I'd buy them. Lol

shoot ! I just checked, its day 10 on the eggs already. little past time for a proper candle . I shined a flash light over some of them on day 6 but didnt remove any or really take a good look. I havent put a drop of water in there either. Humidity gauge in my room has been reading 30-40 so I decided to not mess with water til lock down. Tell me again why I am hatching / trying to hatch more chicks ?

Here is what i have found out about eating first eggs.  Chicks are "supposed" to be on medicated chick starter until they lay that first egg. so of course you wouldnt want to eat eggs from a chicken with that in their system . Although the sulfur in the meds. wouldnt hurt you.   I have never bought a bag of medicated feed so no worries for me.

Second reason is, old wives tale. For luck, you are supposed to throw your first egg OVER your house.  This may be why I dont have good luck. although I am single story I am very sure if i tried this I would either have a roof full of crows(bad luck)  or I would dislocate my shoulder.(more bad luck).

medicated fees is not a danger to humans...the medication is just a coccidiostat, which is a thiamine blocker and would not pose a risk to humans in the amount that *might* make its way into the eggs. Like you I don't use medicated feed, but for those who do, eat away
I've always eaten any egg that didn't give me reason to question is safety, first, last, whatever

Camping I am not sure on those. Wish they were in my flock though. wasnt thinking when I set eggs . We could of found out about shipping.

Mum, The sun does help my pain. some of it anyway. The cat , his name is Binks and he is a Norwegian forest cat. He is an awesome survivor. Few years back he was attacked by a coyote and half his side was gone right down to scratches in the bone. Between the vet and myself he made it and now sleeps on my roof. He has brought me all kinds of "goodys" sine I have had him. about 6 yrs. i think. That is a full sized rabbit and a black bird for dessert. He once brought me a racoon as well. He carried it over the 4 ft. fence to the back porch.

Granny, our new house came with 3 outdoor cats. They are very friendly and we feed them.
Since we are finally getting our fence, we are going to bring the girls to the new house (when I finish the endless coop project). Do you think the cats are a danger to the chickens? We don't have a rooster (also due to close neighbors at the old house) to defend them. Since we have all sorts of critters around us, we plan on doing an electric fence but it will take a while, and I am just worried about the cats being the first obvious danger.
And, since I am in the boonies, our internet connection via satellite is almost as slow as dialup so I can't really read during the weekends. You guys managed to add like 40 pages to the thread... I will never get caught up...

cats normally dont / wont mess with chickens for some reason unknown to me. My hens even chase them off. since you are feeding the cats theres probably no worries but keep an eye just in case.

Cats are a concern with bantams and chicks......Chicks raised by a broody are generally well protected, chick's without a good broody not so much. In all my years with chickens I've not had a single loss or issue with cats. A good, hard peck is usually enough to cow most farm cats....not unusual to see flock around cat dish and cat laying nearby pouting.
