HELP! broody died eggs are dying

Pics
AWESOME.
I am glad you got rid of the mites.
Good job.
Don't forget to treat the coop and other birds for mites asap.
I'm betting that is what sucked the life out of the broody...the mites.

Ooh i know! Yes Im going to have a big cleaning day!
I just cant understand it... the weather was slightly cold which cant be good for rhw mites to breed... and i did put clean starw and powder all around it and in the straw.

The broody never looked ill or shes got mites, like scratching. I also went to check on her. Cleaned her space maybe every 2 days.

Hmm i will take further percautions now

The powder may not be working well...Look into trying a different product.
Mites kill.

Okay! Next time i go to the store i will look for something...
If you have that many mites crawling over your eggs once you brought them inside I am going to say you have serious mite issues in the coop.
You will probably need to treat the birds and coop a few times to get the mite issues under control.
I hope you find a product that works well for you.

I've been battling mites for a couple of years now in two coops. I'm pretty sure the design is part of the problem for harbouring them where I can't get at them... They are both prefabricated coops and the roof is lined with ply underneath and the mites are breeding in the tiny gap between the outer roof and inner lining, but it means tearing it apart to get at it and at this time of year, in this weather, a revamp is just not possible. I have used multiple different products but you have to reapply regularly. The mites breed in the cracks and crevices of the coop so you have to pay particular attention to those areas but also dust the birds.

Hard to know when to 'help'....maybe a hole drilled, what's it called @WVduckchick ?

"safe hole" ;)

Before doing any safe hole, first look for "drawdown" when the air cell goes from its normal uniform shape, to a lopsided looking space. Once drawdown occurs, hatch is usually within a day or two. Internal pip usually happens shortly after drawdown. I wouldn't do a safe hole until at least an internal pip happens.

Comparison pics from normal air cell, then after it had drawn down. The chick is positioning to pip.

Here's a guide to assisting if needed.

Aww thats too nice of you!

Its a bit late now but hopefully you never know!
The chicks are a variety of red rhodes or other types. Im not sure exactly as i got the eggs from a friend. But they are the hardy type chicks.
It good you have the hardy chicks! There gonna need every ounce of hardiness! You can do it.
Nettex do a good range of mite killer. They do a concentrated liquid for spraying and a powder for the nest boxes and hens. You should be able to get it from most country/feed stores. I've had problems with mites and all I can do is minimise the impact best I can. Make sure the hens have a good dry dust bath area aswell.

I heard a chick peep in the morning about 10am now its silent. No noises. No cracking of the shells either. Guess i might have to be more patient huh
Oh, those first peeps! Just enough to make you think you heard something, and then nothing. Then one for sure! Then nothing again. Makes me crazy! You've done a good job trying to save these eggs. Hoping a few hatch for you. And if they don't, at least you know you tried your best.

Well i think its been 24 hours since i heard the first peep. However i did hear the peep again in the morning. Now it is complete silence...
What to do..

Im afraid the chick that was peeping may have stopped. Did the temp change or something. Or is it just taking a bit more time to hatch?

How long would it take. There is no pip or cracks in the shells either. I couldnt pin point the peep either.

At this point, I think you're best off just waiting for a few days to see if anything happens. If you notice a foul smell coming from the eggs, though, you're going to want to get them out of the house!
