Please be mindful if you choose the ether method,
YOU MUST DO IT OUTSIDE.

You could cause yourself to pass out if you do it indoors.

I am so sorry for this terrible calamity.

I agree that you should take a moment “afterwards” if you can to clean the area with water so you can see and try to determine what happened just so it doesn’t happen to any of your other birds.

And yes, even if you think the dog had absolutely nothing to do with it, I’d examine his facial hair and front paws carefully.
Maybe even just barely moisten a corner of a white towel or washcloth and wipe him with it to see if there’s any blood anywhere.

Is it possible a neighbor’s dog came into your yard?

I really hate to sound morbid --and if you can't do it I totally understand-- but you may want to look her over better once she is gone. See if you can figure out what was outside her body and if there was an injury of some sort. At least rule out that it was something that could injure your other ducks.
If you can do it, this could be quite helpful for you to know what happened.
With a prolapse the exposed red tissue is attractive for her flock mates to peck and rip. It can cause them to become focused and relentless about going after it. It can be savage it’s just what they do. I’m so sorry for her. If you think it all the way thru... she’ll have a reoccurring problem every time she lays an egg even if she survives all this trauma.
Show mercy.
Give her loving care to find peace. The kindest thing IMO is to humanly euthanize her. I’m so sorry :hugs
Looking more closely at the picture (on my computer rather than my phone), this makes sense.

I examined the body and it appeared to be a prolapse that was messed with. My dog was examined nose to tail and I didn’t find any indication that she participated in it at all. She plays with kittens and hangs around ducklings so I doubt she would do anything bad to valik.( valik was my ducks name)
The ducks stay in my backyard which had a 5ft fence with concrete preventing any possible dig ins. We also have free range chickens that are completely fine so I think a predator attack is ruled out. Valik also didn’t have any other wounds. I wish I could have saved her but there was unfortunately nothing I could do. Rest In Peace my little duck :hit:love:hit

So sorry that you lost your sweet duck! Layer breeds are predisposed to prolapse. It’s natural for the flock, your dog, and the duck herself to mess with an injury like that. It’s no ones fault, and you did the right thing for her, but it’s still hard. It sounds like you gave Valik a great life, and the graceful death she deserved. Hugs on a rotten day!
