July Hatch-a-Long (including 4th of July hatch-a-long)

Looks like 7 to 8 weeks it is. Between now and then I will have to figure out how to cook a whole duck. . My wife told that to me so it must be true. I had not considered grinding it. I bet it would make a glorious sausage... Mmmmmm

I bet you're right! We like ragù (bolognese meat sauce) and chili. It looks and smells like red meat. Pretty great asset for backyard and urban farms especially. If you try sausage, I'd love to hear how it goes.

I’ve got a magpie duck egg in the incubator that’s on day 21, it had punctures through the shell when it arrived. Couldn’t tell if it was through the membrane or not but I’m guessing not. Of course, it was the only magpie they had to send me, even though I had ordered half a dozen, so I figured well, I guess I’ll try some nail polish and cross my fingers. And so far...

That's awesome it's pluggin' along! I'll try to keep track of your hatch and see how it does. What day do those hatch on? I've only hatched ducks once. Mine were day 27.

They are on day 16.

So close. Come on little guy This egg cracked on day 17. It was the first one of its group to hatch!



On a side note I don't recall ever doing a Hatchalong with so many repaired eggs! Hopefully it's a good sign.

Three more BYM eggs hatched out yesterday into today. Brings the total chicks under 1 week in the brooder to 41. I may have gone a tad overboard.

Still have 8 Sulmater eggs incubating for an early August hatch and then break time. Self imposed but necessary. So many chickens. And I am bad enough off to admit I kind of love having this many....I am beyond help really. Because (fingers crossed) my number comes up on the waitlist and I get my breeding trios from the Holderreads!

My duckies tend to hatch pretty well right on time, the last batch had 1 hatch slightly early, at the end of day 27, with the other 2 following at the end of day 28. Always gotta have that one impatient one. Haha. We’ll see with these eggs, they’re from a different source. Although the chicks from the same place hatched early/on time so who knows. xD

Are you getting the colors you hoped for? I know you were excited about that. The one in the picture is beautiful. Kind of reddish.

I usually have staggered hatches in the early spring. I currently have some Rhode Island White eggs in an incubator due to hatch next week Friday. So far all look good. I don't usually hatch this time of the year but moved birds around because I didn't have a good hatch with a different males so I moved them around and with this male, much better. Looking forward to this hatch.

It looks kind of like my tuxedo did as a tiny. it’s a Rosetta/Tibetan looking thing now and I love it. Lol.

One more peep this morning. We are up to 8 now. Four from Meyer's Hatchery, and four from Summer.

The latest from Summer wasn't very active in the brooder coop and Summer was out with her other chicks, so we threw it in with the Meyer's chickens in the indoor brooder with the temperature control.
