Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

I can't exactly say what everyone else is doing. I suppose they were enjoying the beach this past Memorial Day weekend on both the East and West coast's here in the USA. For me out here in the desert in Arizona, it's getting thing's ready for the predicted 110-F heat that is supposed to be hitting us this coming weekend. They have been battling 3 forest fires north of the Phoenix area. Those are not near me, but we have cleaned the yard of the dead grass and such, so that it will not be fire fuel.

Thanks! I know it looks a little rough, and way too small for 7 Hens, Sammy, and the two young guys but they all fit together on the roosts, so long as they get let out in a timely manner they are happy and have lots of space to roam. I have run into a little hiccup. I can bang up another of these for Barney, but I’m not sure where I can put him to free range and keep him separate enough from Sammy and his buddies. Although Sammy and the two cockerels have an established hierarchy, and they occasionally “discuss” this, they don’t really “fight” it’s mostly a flare, flare, nope, you’re still the “big Rooster”... without any real bloodshed (though if Sammy or Dean gets even a little scratch on their Wattles or Comb they look like a well fed polar bear with their white feathers!)

Barney is separate though, with his own Hens, and takes any other male presence as a challenge to that. They need a good amount of space between the two groups. I’m trying to figure out how to balance physically distancing him enough to maintain peace, while still keeping him somewhere I can close him in easily in the evening, Early enough to be safe from Raccoons. I would like to place him on the road side, but I have seen coon tracks there, and it’s a little further from my view than I would like.

And then there is Roostie, lonely, single man Roostie... who free ranges and hangs out with his two girls, separated by their run, for the girls sanity... I will get this figured out somehow
Couldn't you draw those big white circles on the ground so they could practice social distancing :)

That is one of the things about Kris' life. There is not always time for BYC. No reason we can't chat here though. I love the hen in your avatar. Can you tell me something about her?
Thank you for asking. This is Princess when she was a pullet. She's all grown up and a hen now but when I do my daily hour with the chickens playing in the backyard she usually jumps up in my lap for a little snuggle. I sit with the chickens while they are outside their coop and run. Too many critters looking for a free lunch around here.

I do the same with mine. The lap cuddle is the best!

Hi everyone! Yes, I’m still around just not much free time right now. Hoppy has taken a turn for the worse, and we are in a palliative care situation. I will probably need to put her down this weekend, so I’ve been getting as much snuggle time in as possible while trying to coax her to eat and drink. In other news, the house is still on pause, and FIL had BIL catch a gosling and they stuffed it in with my chickens.

The gosling “escaped” while I was moving the chicken tractor the next morning. Well,TBH and because I know no one here will rat me out on it, I gave it back to it’s parents as soon as we got back to the trailer. Daddy Gander was trying to beat his way into the tractor and not happy at all. All the chickens were traumatized. They had also chased off the other baby who was missing for several hours but reappeared just at dusk. It hid very well, and I escorted it to the pond and parents. Needless to say I was steamed.

I got reamed out for our sausage flyer, because someone called the aunt in law about ordering sausage. It is a $200 order so I’m still pretty happy about it, and I was able to get the call the second time around. I also flipped out because they let the cows into the area with my chickens. I shouldn’t worry about it because it won’t be a problem. Well, we came home to a whole new “arrangement” of chicken tractors, several escaped chicks, and I was very angry. I believe this is the first time Andrew has seen me truly furious, and I lost it completely at him. Yesterday was damage control, as it was too late when we got in to do much more than immediate necessities so the chickens could get to bed. I am short two meat chicks and there are at least ten with injuries ranging from bruised feet and legs, through lacerations and missing foot scales, and a few broken toes. None of the older chickens were hurt, as they are more maneuverable than my little meaties.

I’m probably going to be a little random in showing up online for a while. But I’m going to try to be on more often. I’m stretched a little thin and trying to keep up with things on three different properties right now, chickens here, gardening new the town, and with chickens being fostered on another property as well! Take care everyone, and I will try to be by more often.

So sorry to here about Hoppy. I was very hopeful but I understand her situation. I wish you did not have to deal with this on top of everything else.

Please know that we keep you in our thoughts. Don't feel pressure to update us, just keep on with your life and update us when you can. You have enough pressure with everything else. We understand.

:hugs :hugs:hugs
