(I am sorry about the other post, I screwwed up.) I have a very large hornets nest on the outside back corner of one of my coops. The chickens can not get very close but have been hanging out about 10 feet from where the hornets are. Please tell me a way to get rid of it safely, for us and the chickens.

Get some hornet spray - the kind that sprays a great distance. Then after dark spray the nest - trying to hit the hole if possible.

That is probably the best way, but have you considered telling the neighbour kids its a piniata??? Just a thought.

It is okay to use hornet spray around the chickens? I was under the impression they were very sensitive to things like that.

You could call your local extermiantor. They may remove it safely for you. And they may be pretty reasonable for just the removal. You wouldn't have to have them come every month or anything. Just the one time deal.

At dusk, you can get some wasp/hornet spray and spray by the opening while someone holds a large plastic sheet up so that the spray doesn't blow towards the chickens. You might want to cover up that section of the ground and make sure that you wear rubber-soled footwear. Then get a plastic bathroom or kitchen garbage can that snaps shut. One person uses a tool to knock the nest off the NEXT day into the garbage can. Then spray insulation is used to fill up the can. Snap the cover on and throw it into the garbage. You've just saved yourself a fortune. I tried it myself when nobody helped me and it worked. (Also did it with a yellowjacket nest.)

Thanks. I think I would be afraid to use the spray if there is a chance it could hurt my girls.

There is a safer spray which is a poison-free mint oil spray. It won't hurt your chickens or yourself. It kills insects such as wasps and hornets. It will also hurt beneficial bees, etc. Smells really nice in the garden after that. I got mine at the local agriculture co-op store.

This what I got at my local store. Found it at this website too:

Good luck...
