Well my flock is ok today, they did get to free range, but few took the opportunity. I think, they think, the cold wet stuff coming out of the sky is my fault.
Meanwhile, big change here... One of DW's friends on FB is moving to a small apartment and had to re-home all her chickens and her LGD. So we now have a Pyrenees mix that's two years old. Once I teach him where to guard and where not to go, I should substantially reduce my losses. But first, I have to teach him that the pigs are ok, they won't hurt the chickens. He went crazy when he saw chickens in with the pigs. And when one of the chickens complained in the upper pasture, it was all I could do to keep him with us. I'm in uncharted territory here, but have a friend who will guide me.
Apparently, he will herd chickens back into safe areas, if they wander too far.
I'm now in serious learning mode. Wasn't ready for a new dog and still having trouble with the concept of a full time outside dog. The last owners let him in, in the mornings to sleep eat and drink.
