WE GOT ANOTHER DOG Sunday
ya.gif
. She is our 6th dog at the moment and is the cutest, also the smelliest
sickbyc.gif
, weiner dog in the world. Her name is Tina and she is 5 weeks old (I know its a week early but her mom was starting to lose interest in caring and feeding the litter any way) and she is all black except for a white diamond on her chest that is exactly like her moms and adopted moms (We already have 2 chiweenies, our female could almost match the real mom inch for inch except her white diamond is bigger and she isnt as long and kinda fat) so eventually when the chewing age is over our chiweenie Negrita is going to adopt her. Negrita always tries to adopt everything smaller than her but the rats abd cats just dont like her that much LOL. So I know that once she stops trying to nurse Negrita will take her in

. So yeah. Im sleep deprived, exausted, and couldnt be happier

... cept for the whole sleep thing

Dog should not be taken from thier mother before 8 weeks - please do some research on this - you may be semi ok because you have brought her home to a "pack" where she can learn dog manners - but be aware that you are waaay early on this pup.

And I speak from tragic knowledge, my DH brought a pup home that was too young and by the time he was home they were gone from in front of the store. The dog was an only dog and she was never right - and we have had plenty of dog experience before and since. We know it was mostly due to her leaving the mom too soon and part the breeding.

Best of luck with the little one.

please be nice to op she stated that is was best for the pup

I was not trying to be mean. It is natural for the mother to begin the weaning process at about 4 weeks. It does not mean the pup is ready to leave the mother. Do your own research and find out more. If you disagree with me, fine.

Just stating the facts. If I offended the OPer, I apologize. I knew this fact when DH brought home our dog, my DH did not. So we raised and lived with a severly neurotic dog for too many years.

I don't think there was anything wrong with your post at all. 5 weeks is way too young to leave the mother. The appropriate time is usually between 8 to 10 weeks, if not longer for some breeds. The mom does use this time to teach the pup manners.

I hand raised two boston terriers from day one. They lost their mother in labor. The man that had them couldn't properly feed or care for such little babies. I know how hard it was to teach the girls how to be a "dog", fortunately I have another dog that was extremely patient and very well behaved. Kipp has no neurotic behaviors other then she thinks she is a person.

Not only is the puppy too young to really be away from mom, but what about the vaccines for the little darling? Most "breeders" will have at least 2 vaccines done before puppy leaves. This is really important, as the puppy could be at risk.

(Also, be careful with your other dog and your puppy trying to nurse. Sometimes it can cause false pregnancies and cause the grump to lactate.)
