No Crow roo collar?

This sounds like where I am. Dogs Barking, kids shouting and screaming at all hours , people burning rubbish in there gardens smoking my house out. Mostly we have to close the windows and bring the washing in. And the pub opposite playing music really really loud until whatever hour they please. The sound of a cockeral crowing is far nicer than the strangled cat screeching that happens when they have a karaoke night! I can have a cockeral if I wanted but the first noise complaint and he would have to go so I don't. There is so much more antisocial behaviour around me and I would be vilified for having one. I must admit that I'm not sure a collar is particularly kind to the cockeral. I would worry about him maybe chocking if he was to try and swallow something larger and it stops him from being what he is including the crowing. I'm not sure how restrictive they are.I don't know what would be best for you. Only you know that. But have a contingency plan ready if it doesn't work out. I heard that brahma cockerals are fairly quiet and they are really nice and big!

I wouldn't worry about choking, the collar is suppose to stop the rooster from puffing up its crop to crow. Everything else it can still do.

If roosters are banned where you live in NZ I'm curious what is the fine? Also it can affect other backyard keepers by earning an all out ban by the council and impact your entire regions keepers. I like your willingness to turn him in to soup if it doesn't work out. So you have to weigh ALL of the pros with the cons on this issue. Please don't do a thing to get the council to think they need to take some action against other ordinance compliant Kiwis.

I live i an urban area. My section is double the amount of size than any of my neighbours. The rules are different for me rgan my neighbours because i live in a large lot residential which means the place has a more rural feel. So everything is different for me. For example i am aloud up to ten and they are aloyd up to five. So i dont think they would to a complete ban on chickens, thats just not how it works.

Well, we used to be able to have 10 hens without a permit. But due to someone breaking all the rules they redid the rules and now you can only have 6.
Those that HAD 10 before are NOT grandfathered in ! They wanted to ban all chickens or make you jump through hoops and permits to have just a few. Good thing they have meetings on these things as people came. Some to complain some all for the hens !

If your neighbors are only allowed 5 and you 10, then you Break the rules ... I am betting you will have one person that will raise holy hell. They might be thinking it is not FAIR that YOU get 10 AND you get to break the rules.

How is it not fair that i can have ten? There lot is half the size of mine and none of my neighbours even have chooks. I live in a small remote village ( more like a tiny town) and there are only like 5?chicken owners that i know of. They won't care about me breaking The UNFAUR rooster rules aslong as the roo is not an annoyance. They dont even know the rules lol. They dont care about or for chickens. And again, all my neighbours are nice and freindly and most have front lawns between the fence and them. the ones we know the least are on the other side of the paddock than us so its fine anyway.

If they are gonna complain about my chickens i will complain about there noisy, annoying dogs. And heck every now and then i hear a chickens egg song from someone a block away and no complaints.

Hi guys, I am considering adding a rooster to my flock but i live in an area where roosters are banned. I was wondering if roos would actaully be quiter than hens with a collar. My thoughts would be that if the rooster crows 10 times a day, and the hens do 10 egg songs a day, what would be louder. I am guessing the hens because the egg song last a couple of minutes but the crow last like 3 secs. And if you take include the collar that ads another point for the roosters. i was also wondering if there are certain breeds that would be better for urban living? But anyways thanks for your replys.

Personally, I would just not get the rooster. By breaking the rules you could well jeopardize your right and the rights of others to have any chickens at all.

I just don't get it how people don't like hearing a rooster crow. We have no noise restrictions at all where I live but I chose my property for exactly that reason. Chicken weren't part of the plan but became a part later after I found too many scorpions for comfort so decided their food sources had to go(hopefully). I re-homed all of my roos and really miss the crowing I now have such a quiet property unless the hens are laying and singing that song. Regardless, 50% of my neighbors have roos that crow all night and my neighbor has a dog that barks all night long and it is the dog I find most annoying.

Personal preference. I love hearing a rooster crow. Not everyone does. Especially in crowded conditions such as a town.

Maybe you should go to your town council and work on getting the law changed.

????, Its collar or die. I would like to save one of my chicks lives so he can grow up to be a nice boy. I have 5 GLW and 9 Barnevelders. I am planning on keeping one of my roos.

Sometimes the collar makes them die. It works by restricting their throats to get enough air to crow. Some roosters have died by trying to swallow something too big to get past the collar. Personally, I think it's selfish to use one just so I could have my way. Seriously - if you want to keep roosters do your best to work on getting the laws changed.

You mentioned that it's OK for you to break the rules because your lot is twice as big ad your neighbors' lots. So? What makes you so special that you don't have obey the law? Why are you more entitled than they are? You also said it was OK for you to break the rules because your neighbors don't know the laws. How do you know? Have you taken a poll? They might surprise you, and not in a pleasant way.

I can't remeber saying its ok for me to break the rules because of the property i live on ( And if i did i didin't mean it). I cant get the law changed because the law thatvapplys to me isin't the towns law. Its the type of property i live on that makes the rules. The law dosen't consider the town and the place you live it only considers your property type (eg. Rural, Urban, Large lot residential).

I keep trying to tell people this, The law that applys to me is a very broad law that dosen't consider your neighbour hood and where you live. It just considers the type of property you live on. By changing the law that applys to me i could be chamging the law for someone else in the middle of a city!. There is no town law for animal keeping. There is a by law for the category your property is put together under by size.

There could be someone with a rooster and all the neighbours like the sound and dont mind, but it would still be ileagle. And as i said before, There are dogs barking, Pubs playing music untill midnight so it would just be unfair for them to complain about a rooster. My hen can be louder than a rooster!, and no complaints. If they take away my future rooster i will take away their dog.

But the fact remains that it is still the law. Which leads me to ask again - why are you so entitled that you don't have to obey it? As far as it being "unfair"... That's life. It's not fair. It's not "fair" to your neighbors that you feel you can break the law, either. Sorry - "It's not fair" is not a valid argument or reason to do something.
