OEGB - broodiness, personality, egg-laying, maturity?

Pics
Ah, thank you for keeping up with my chicken life, I remember you!
I enjoy reading your own posts, so I'm glad you'll be keeping up with my own chicken stuffs :). Gracie so far seems like she's going to be one of those perpetually broody girls; it's seriously not been that long since she lost her chicks, and she's already back at it, haha. THIS time we have the old coop MUCH more secured, and we're much better prepared in general. I think it'll all go well this time, as long as we keep the fan pointed toward the old coop, Florida is way too hot this time of year, lol.
Also, THIS time I'm going to update with pics once things get going :).
Thanks for your interest :)
I remember you too! We talked game bantam together!

I'm hoping my own OEGB hen, Enna, will go broody next spring, though I don't see how she could brood many eggs under that tiny body! But I don't want her broody this year because I am wanting to take her to fair.

One of my friend's hens went broody so I have her some fertile eggs from my flock. Most will be mixes, but I gave her a few eggs from Enna in hopes that Enna was mated by the OEGB rooster and not the silkie rooster!:fl

Can't wait for those pictures!

I still really want some modern game bantams eventually, their long legs are just too adorable, haha :).
I know right, I'm surprised at how many eggs she can fit under her tiny body; when we gave her her eggs, she used her beak to push them underneath herself one by one, I was cracking up, lol, so cute.
Five bantam eggs fit under her no problem, none poke out!

I don't do fairs but- if I did, I suppose if one went broody I'd have to break her out of it, which always seems mean to me, lol; we have a frizzled bantam cochin named yuki who has been broody for a month, I feel so bad for her, we keep taking her eggs, she hasn't given up yet ;/ might have to break her out of it.

All of our chickens are different breeds except the two bantam frizzled cochins, so no matter what we do any chicks will be crossbreeds, but I think it's pretty cool to have mixes, there's no easy way to predict what the chicks will look like :D. If we had enough room I'd like to do pure breeding, but for now mixes are just fine, for a regular backyard flock :).

Modern game bantams are so funny with the long legs! I love them! The problem is, my dream flock keeps growing, and soon not even the whole world will be able to contain it!:lau

Five bantam eggs! Wow!

I love crosses too! So unpredictable, and often each one looks different! A bit off subject but I once heard that if you let a mixed breed flock reproduce at will then eventually the descendents will start to look like Jungle Fowl, the origin of chickens. Have not proved this though.

I have been trying to remind myself to start a chat thread for mixed-breed chickens and chicks but I keep forgetting. Maybe I'll go do it now. Are you interested?

Oh I know what you mean, if I had it my way I'd have an extreme amount of chickens in different setups, organized by size, type, etc...lol! I also would like to keep pigeons someday, but that's just a dream for now, haha :p.

I've heard that same thing! I wonder if it's true, and if so, how many generations / genetic diversity it takes to get to that point? I really wish I could control a population and observe until it got to that point, it'd be really neat to see.

I'd definitely be interested, pure breeds are cool and all but you always know generally what they will look and act like- mixed breeds are where surprises come in, and I'm always interested to see something new; the chicks that should hatch three weeks from now will make a good talking point for me on what self blue OEGB x btb Japanese Bantam and white frizzled bantam Cochin x btb Japanese bantam turns out to look like :)

I just barely got pigeons, so simple but remarkably cool! Can't wait until I can fly them. You should definitely get some...someday!I

Yeah, maybe I'll have a mixed breed pen and try the Jungle Fowl test...in my dream flock;)

I just posted the mixed breeds thread. I've been planning it for a while so it didn't take to long to type out. Here is the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/barnyard-mixes-chat-thread.1386007/

Can't wait to see your chicks! 21 long days of waiting to go...

I have to go now, chat with you later!

OEGB x Bantam Cochin ———-> Very Broody Hens and even Roosters that carry broodiness genes to their offspring.

If you want a self-sustaining flock and don’t have an incubator, that mix would be The (Chick) Bomb.

Chicken Math: Multiplication.

My (only) cockerel is a black tailed buff Japanese Bantam, but I do have a self-blue OEGB pullet and two white frizzled Cochin bantam pullets; so those are my options as far as breeding crossbreed bantams go :p
All three of them have been broody at various times and they're only about 7-8 months old, so I can definitely see how they would pass down broodiness to their offspring!

My little Japanese bantam cockerel does try to mate with the bigger girls on occasion (Buff Orp, Barred Rock, Cream Legbar, Buff laced Polish) but he seems to miss the mark or just falls off entirely during the process (lol), but if he ever gets it down properly I'd love to see what a mix of any of the above would produce~ Does bantam male + LF female = bantam or LF or in between?

So, back on here after a hiatus, Gracie the self-blue OEBG has gone broody again, so we're gonna give this another go :). We let her have: One of her own eggs, + four frizzled bantam Cochin eggs. The cockerel is the same for all of them, a BTB Japanese Bantam. We'll see what happens! Hopefully the chicks LIVE this time, lol.

Bootsie's EE chick ended up being male, at least we're pretty sure it is male, so we're going to have to give it up; highly doubt Taichi will put up with another dude around, haha.
Yay! Hoping for the best this time around, and can’t wait to see any pictures!
I just had my own modern game hen go broody earlier this week, this will be her first time! She has 7 eggs under her, and is so far doing great! (I can’t remember exactly what the eggs are off the top of my head, whoopsies! I’ll have to check the marks on them when I candle them tonight!)

Me too, and I definitely WILL take and upload pictures this time, starting from the day they hatch!
Oooooo, awesome! I can't even imagine how adorable a modern game broody would look, lol~ I wish you luck!
