Official Squatch Watchers

I went outside to let the chickens out and within 5-10 minutes my digits were in extreme pain. These softies aren’t use to 7 degrees!

We have more snow falling, but not thick snow. There were so many pictures on FB and the news of everyone’s beautiful snowflakes. Kids are out again. We will slowly rise to 25 today

There was some idiot girl on the news who literally got frost bite on her fingers from playing out in the snow w/ no gloves one for hours. Now I'm not going to say that I never go outside and do stuff w/o gloves on, but I do notice when my hands start to hurt from the cold. Apparently this kid didn't realize it and they seriously thought she was going to lose some of her fingers... HOW do you not realize you're THAT cold?

Bad news hubby's not going home. Due to high fever blood in upper frontal part of lung, they would rather wait for results, & see if temp will remain normal. They called in infection control ,saying high fever is running a muck on this floor. I knew something wasn't right with place :hit:rant:he:hit:thI think I 'll just stay quiet.

So sorry. :hugs:hugs

Do the kids down there get snow days? We get 5, but will need to make up any others after that.. we've used 5 so any additional days off get added to the end of the year. It's finals week and they've missed so much I think they're trying to avoid closing so my kids had school today, but it was a frigid 4 degrees when I dropped them off. I didn't bother going to let the chickens out this morning b/c it's just so freakin' cold. Last night I stopped in and discovered their waterer was completely dry so I had to refill when it was 8 degrees out. The door handles to my coop are metal and my fingers kept freezing to them. Their coop was 22 inside but I would have bet $$ that it was closer to 10 in there. There was one frozen egg that had cracked open and someone had taken it upon themselves to eat another one of the eggs too.. found shell stuck to another egg. I've got so many eggs in my fridge I'm of the mind that it doesn't bother me, as long as it doesn't become a thing. Plus I think it's that the eggs break and they eat them, rather than them breaking the eggs to eat them. They have a flock block in there and I'm sure there's 1/2 a bag of scratch mixed in the straw on the floor so it's not like they don't have any thing to do all day long or that they're starving.

Ugh.... you'd think if there was a problem they would have been watching him more closely... The reason people get sick in hospitals more than they would at home is b/c they're dragging germs from one room to another all day long. Sigh. I hope things get better for you guys. Did they do testing to see what the black stuff was?

I've been taking notes for 45 minutes.

@MrsMistyReal i hope and pray you can get DH out of there today so he can come home and start the healing process and you can both get some much needed sleep.

@Anansi as always, you are so kind to us :love I hope you get good sleep and a great day til we see you again.

@Suzi18
Tilly is a gorgeous bird. I didn't know orps came like that either! I especially like how her skirt coordinates with her body...
I love sawyer!
That name was on my short list last time we got a dog. ...may have to try again with the next one.

We miss you and the little MD @Redhead Rae

@apryl29 i wish I had kids in the house to beg me for chickens. I'm a little sad. My last one moved out this past week. She's 20. (An immature-ish 20)
I'd be happy for her to leave the nest if the circumstances were optimal, like moving in with a bunch of nice girls and spreading her wings... but at the last minute we found out her BF was part of the deal , and honestly friends, we don't think that highly of him. Don't see a future there even though she thinks there is.
Some thing in life can only be learned through first hand experience I suppose.
We'll be here if she needs me later to help her pick up the pieces.

@Sassysouth , is there anyway you could throw down an old white towel under the roost tonight to get a better look at that worrisome poop?

@Smuvers Farm
The snow pictures are beautiful.
Let's hope PIC doesn't get sick. There's something to be said for fresh air but...
Also my bedroom =my cave

@CapricornFarm
My heart goes out to you on these losses
I don't know how you stay strong.
Why is it that SS are so vulnerable?
Don't get anymore of them!
Have you ever tried a supplement called 5-Htp ?
I use it in the winter and i actually think it helps. Even if it's just a placebo effect, they are small and easy to swallow. I take 2 in the evening. I think it helps me get better sleep too.

@pitbullmomma
I love having you in our group for all the info you supply us with such as....
Hyperkeratosis.
My dog has it on his stop pads but he's old and they are high up. I leave it alone and occasionally put whipped vasaline on it to soften, but whatever I put on he manages to lick off.

@FlyingNunFarm i'd watch it for a while before fooling with in this cold weather. The last thing you need is an infection.
It sure looks like hyperkeratosis but if your roosts are wooden maybe I'd give them a fresh sanding if you get a warm day to reduce any spots mites may be hiding and to make sure they're smooth.
In spring I'd snip with cuticle nippers before attempting to file in case the grooves run deep -again, because of the risk of infection.

People feet:
Has anyone ever tried the listerine/ white vinegar foot soak?
It is AMAZTATERS!
I highly recommend it.

1 cup listerine
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup water in a small plastic tub big enough to put your footies in.

Soak feet for 1/2 hr. Read BYC while your doing it.

Then go to town with a foot file. Smooth heels like you haven't seen in years and feet feel invigorated for hours.
*the regular listerine is golden colored. Blue is minty. If you cheap out and buy the blue/minty in a store brand (did that once) your toenails might be a bit blue for a few days-just sayin'

@Rubysword so glad to here your retreat went great! I was worried about you freezing.

I know @rjohns39 is absent...

But where is @TexasSam ?!?
I hope he's okay!

It's sooo hard when you're young and just want to 'be on your own' even if it's w/ an idiot boyfriend. I stayed w/ my ex-husband wayyyyy longer than I should have just b/c I didn't want to go back to living w/ my parents. (Actually never should have married him, but was too embarrassed to cancel a wedding 2 weeks before - plus we'd bought a trailer a few months before and didn't feel like I could just walk away- PLUS having to move back into my parent's house). As long as they're renting and she knows she can come back any time hopefully you won't have to worry too much. And maybe being out on her own-ish for a bit will help her grow up a little. I'm not looking forward to the days when my kids are grown... well, maybe a little bit, but they also say they're never moving out.. my youngest one can't b/c then she'd have no one to put her socks on her each morning and cover her up at night (she's a baby penguin and she doesn't have opposable thumbs.. she also can't wash her own hair).

That foot soak sounds awesome.. Thanks! I got my youngest a foot bath for xmas that they now share.. dancers feet.. smelly and peeling. I'm going to make them try that.
