Official Squatch Watchers

Our rain needs seem to be pretty awesome. Not too much, not too little. We *grew* purple sweet potatoes last year by planting and forgetting them.

Never thought about stacking 2x6s. I think we'll go that route for the rest of the boxes... thanks!

We had *leftover* bags of top soil we bought last year to even out the ground for an above ground pool. The pool broke anyway and the bags have been sitting there ever since. Didn't think about mixing them with anything so we might be screwed because of it. Gonna see about placing an order for bulk top soil and will make a mix out of it before putting it into the raised beds.

You can top dress after the plants are a few inches tall. Just sprinkle a little 1/4" of composted steer manure around them. It will give them a boost just when they need it.

Anyone in your house drink coffee?
If so you can sprinkle the grounds on top too. Its a nice slow release nitrogen food for the plants.

Turn your pea plants into the soil when you are done getting peas too. Same with beans. More nitrogen sources there.

I did that last year and had better crops of what I planted after.

You likely already know this stuff. :p

Kind of rambling reminders to myself too.

When it comes to gardening, I will take any and all help I can get. Complete novice, even though I've planted gardens in 3 different states... well, now 4. I will now bug the carp outta YOU with all my novice needs. Shoulda kept quiet!!! :lau

I am making the most recent raised beds out of concrete block. No worries about rotting wood.
The weather has been lovely the last 2 days. I got 2 wagon loads of bunny poo and hay off the floor in the barn and that went down to the garden. Pulled weeds, picked up sticks. I am going to have to move one of the raised beds so i can get the wagon in there to the back of the garden. I should probably put the hot wire on again, as i have cabbage, carrots and cauliflower growing. I moved the top for the cold frame up to the workshop area so i can build the frame for that glass, put hinges on and be done. Then it can go down to the garden.
I planted hyacinths today and the 2 packs of violas i bought at Walmart the other day. I need more mulch as usual.
I set up another 5 gallon bucket for a bunny water system for the bunnies in the chicken yard. And i am making a small barrier to put across the doorway in the coop so the shavings stay back from the door. It keeps jamming, and i am tired of it. Pieces cut and painted, hope to assemble tomorrow. And i want to clean and spray the coop. Might as well deworm the chickens at the same time.
Oh, and there is a grapefruit sized hole in the tarp on the hoop coop! Idk what was trying to get in but i am glad i used welded wire on the whole thing!

Oh, and we're not big coffee drinkers. I'll have a cup of decaf instant every once in a while..... DH and I have our own separate french presses... but the grounds go into our indoor compost bucket and goes out to the compost area. We really only drink coffee during the winter... and even then, we wouldn't make enough grounds to *help*.

Oh, and I have NO IDEA where I'd find steer manure. Yeesh!

Steer manure....... Home depot is to far from you......
Lowes should carry it. Sheep and peat works well too. Harder for me to find here.

The steer stuff at HD here is just under 2 bucks a bag and is pretty decent. I have no idea on Lowes.......

Composted chicken leavings are good but need to be really composted like 18 months or its to much ammonia.

There is a dairy down the road from us. I got a pick-up truck full of composted manure last year for $40. I used most of it in the garden and planting bushes around here. I plan to get another load this year.
I remember Dad buying metal trash cans full of sheep manure for the garden when i was a kid
He was a good gardener. I sure loved those peas! I need to get busy planting!

OH I forgot to share with y'all a few things!

1. We cracked 5 of the *dirty* eggs today to check for fertility. We saw a bullseye in one of the dark brown ones, nothing in the 3 whites or one of lighter brown/peachy one.

2. I finally named our other black rooster. He is called Shark, cause he is always following me and circles me whenever I go into the run. I always end up humming the theme from Jaws while he's following me. He lets me pet him and pick him up and fix his feathers. I am quite fond of him..... but his coloring isn't close to being as gorgeous as Fat Bastard.

3. Our beautiful boy, Holy, FINALLY crowed today!! Well, he's trying to. We built that new roost, and FB climbs up there and does his crow.... and then Shark gets up and does his little half crow... and then today, I hear this crow that sounded very new and it was Holy standing up on the new roost! Made my day!
