I need to catch up, but I found someone semi local who has 3 lavender orp chicks & 1 lav Cemani cross that are recently hatched. I gave Loki 2 eggs I am fairly certain are not fertile (eggers that don't mate w/ Willie) to keep her on the nest and once I get the babies I'll tuck them under her. I put her in the cage I'd set up, but she rejected. She's staying in there now b/c that's where her eggs are so I'm hoping once I do the switch she'll happily stay in the nest w/ her new babies.
My daughter goes into the hospital on Monday so hopefully everything works out this time and she's able to keep them safe. And now I need to find me some hardware wire. Thank you to everyone for all your support! This past few months have been INSANE. Can't wait for things to calm down a bit for us.
Have I mentioned that my boss seemed to be blocking out that I'm taking time off. Every time I say something about me not being here she acts like it's the first time she's hearing it. I've set things up to be the bare minimum for her to deal with and she's asking about things she doesn't need to do.. like returned notices. I told her she only has to worry about them if I die, the SOMEONE will have to do it, but this week, it's not important. In 2 weeks, it's not important. I just don't know why this is so hard for her.

I have a (sorta) funny story. Yesterday I get home and my husband says "something terrible happened!" and he looked kinda freaked out. Of course my freaking heart almost stopped! cuz I thought something happened to one of the dogs (or chickens--it's messed up, but I don't even think it would be about a people, I think it's about a pet, lol).

So I'm like WHAT?!! and he launches into this long-winded story, I'm like WTF, are my animals OK?! (they are.) So, he lets the dogs out the back door into the yard (no, little Emma the PugChi didn't get eaten by a hawk). A chipmunk runs across the yard, and faster than taters, Penny (part Jack Russell, a ratter) snatches it up and runs away with it in her mouth. So, Emma jumps up in her face, growls at it, steals it out of Penny's mouth, and is tearing around the yard with it. Bucco, the big dumb Pit Bull, is just sitting there watching. Joe starts screaming like a girl--because he is afraid of dead animals--and is yelling DROP IT DROP IT do you want a cookie??!!! Until the stupid dog drops it on the back porch.

So Joe (my big manly Italian) is like "Please get rid of it, I can't look at it" in this girly voice. So I go out, pet it (it's dead, but I like chipmunks), pick it up by the tail, and swing it over the fence into the woods....and the end of the tail comes off in my hand.

Cue to Joe screaming, and me peeing my pants laughing. He is such a WUSS.

That is hysterical!! :gig:lau
I would have peed too!

:woot On finding some chicks for Loki!

Maybe the boss is freaked cause she knows you do so much and she is insecure......

So, I found this at walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/MAT-24X10-HDWRE-CLTH/157536736 and this at lowes: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Blue-Hawk-...d-Steel-Hardware-Cloth-Rolled-Fencing/4780947

It's 2' tall.. do you think I'd be ok if I cut it in 1/2 so it's 1' tall, or do you think I need to go w/ 2'? both are 1/2" holes.

Personally I would think one foot tall should work. Loki would easily be able to jump it if there is no other barrier but if I remember right there is chicken wire too.

Rae. Your signature. I am cracking the hell up laughing....! :lau

~Rae - 110+ chickens. I finally lost count.
I sold 7 last week, and hatched 4 more this week. I intend to do in 6 roosters this weekend. I am doing this because I need to move the older chicks I have in the coop out on pasture and move the babies I have in the house out to the coop.

I love my Cornish. I put my 3 Cornish babies that hatched Wednesday and Yesterday in the brooder with the older birds last night. I kept checking on them and after dark I found the littles snuggled up with the older Cornish and 1 week old EEs.

Look at the size difference. The bigger one has 4 weeks on the day old baby.

If we had a Roomba it would end up lost, trapped or destroyed. Or place is small, 3 bedrooms, one "great room" and then a small kitchen and an add on that is now bedroom #4. In this house are 6, not so neat humans, 3 dogs, 1 cat, 2 chickens, 2 parakeets, 9 pet rats, 3 tanks of fish, 1 tank of tad poles, 2 enclosures for tree frogs, all of their regular food and all of the creepy crawlies to feed them. Roomba has no room to do it's job. Space is at a premium, but we make it work.

Now you know my dirty little shameful secret:oops::oops::oops::oops:

Hey guys.

Dealing with some sorrow right now. I was hanging out with the chickens, and saw a trail of feathers. I started to hyperventilate, and sure enough, they led to a mutilated chicken. One of our light brahmas. Head missing, body cavity cleaned out from the rear. I think I forgot to do a head count last night, and a raccoon killed her. My little brother thought he heard a chicken screaming last night. My dad went to check if the coop was ok. It was. He saw a cat running away. It probably was one of the many other animals to share in the bounty. We know it happened last night because I spent time with them yesterday and they were all there, and it had definitely been dead for a while, judging by the flies. We've dealt with predator deaths and deaths by sickness before, but none of them have been quite so gruesome. She was one of the sweetest birds we had. I don't have many questions, because I know what I did wrong and how to fix it, I just needed to write it down and get it all out.
