Do you pluck those nasty buggers off the maters?
I hope not to see those. :sick

They are so destructive!
I have to pluck those suckers off of there! By the time I noticed signs they had done so much damage!
Found five of them yesterday on five different plants and each of them were as thick as my thumb! I hate how muscular they feel when you pull them off the plant and they are fighting against you. Yuck yuck yuck! They are very early this year

What do you guys think of my updated Avatar? I think he is even more handsome now than he was at 8 months.

I always debate about those.. they turn into a hawk moth... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manduca_quinquemaculata
I usually have a volunteer mater in a bad spot that I move a few to.. my chickens eat them too.. and there are wasps lay eggs in them

They are beautiful! I still don't want their kids eating my maters......
A donation mater isn't a bad idea though.
I have many maters so could donate one to them if they move in.
:thumbsup

When I lived in the sticks I had an invasion. On my way out the door in the dark I thought hmmmmm I need to water the maters. They look droopy. When I got home there were just sticks left and hundreds of ickies.
I like Molpets idea of a sacrificial plant for them.
My chickens have never seen one lol.

Today's activities are difficult to do with muddy dog runs. The dogs have to stay inside where they wrestle, bounce and make chaos.

I have a question for @staceyj .
The flies are BAD this year. Sable looks to have fly bites inside her ear that sticks up.
Not sure what I can do about them. They don't seem to bother her.
I won't leave the dogs out since I don't want them bit up.

21 hens - watch that Sable doesn't get fly strike

I am closely watching her ears. She must be tasty as none of the others have been bitten.

If I can get her to hold still I want to wipe her ears with alcohol.

I have never had a dog bit like this. In the sticks we had biting gnats. If we were to be out long I would spray the dogs with the same spray I used on the cattle.
Just a very light spray did the trick. Once inside they got a wet rag wipe down.

First off make sure the dogs ears aren’t dirty. Dirty ears are just a magnet for bacteria and yeast but bugs too.
About ten years ago I was frustrated with my dog having recurrent ear infections and hated the cycle of antibiotics and that gross ear cleaning stuff from the vets which almost always contain glycerin (a sugar).
I stumbled upon a cocker breeders website and tried their recipe for a home mixed ear cleaning solution and Darn if it didn’t clear up the next infection in just a few days without antibiotics.

I told my vet about it, and with his blessing I used it the next few times it occurred even though they’d become farther apart because we eliminated grains from his diet.
Some grains like oats he does fine with but wheat really flares him up. Even a pizza crust snuck to him by DH will result in a bad ear a few days later.

Eventually my vet started using it on his dogs and two years later it became his first course of treatment for all the ear infections that he saw.

I’ve never looked back.
I use it for ear cleaning every couple of weeks, more often if he swims.

The bottle she refers to in the instructions for measuring/mixing/storing I’ve always been able to find at sally beauty supply in the hair dying section.
