Last night I got to enjoy a couple of firsts..
A field mouse was caught in one of my traps, by it's foot.. it was still alive. So I got the experience of beating a mouse to death with a brick.

Then Nibbler found a dead bird and was trying to eat it so I got to chase her around while screaming Drop it! Don't eat that! Get back here! Let go of it!
Then I caught her and tried to get her to let it go... finally she dropped it & my dad scooped it and the mouse up.

Good times.
That is hardcore right there.

I can see one setting in the tray and one just got free of the shell and is sleeping. eggs are rolling around in the tray so zipping is underway.
Awww, watching them hatch is the best part! Glad your oinkers are doing so good, you going to keep them all or have bacon for days?

Ack, don't remind me. I don't want to even thing about him as a teenager yet.

I tried with my nails, didn't work. That is why we used rocks and water baths. The pliers would be MUCH better. I had trouble holding the rocks because I was flooded with adrenaline. Catching and holding birds that fight as hard as she did really jangles my nerves.

Sounds like you had a night almost as busy as mine, maybe more stressful even.
Just remember boys can't get pregnant. So that makes it a little bit easier to have a teenage son.

I know what you mean! You just want to scream I'M TRYING TO HELP YOU! which I do and they look at me like I'm crazy.

The dead bird wouldn't have bothered me if I had known how it died... We have west nile here and I'm not about to let her eat something that might be diseased.. plus, it STUNK!

As everyone slowly backs away from April, right? lol A mouse is one thing... I'm having someone come this weekend to 'dispatch' Odin. It's time... and I worry about how life will be when winter comes. I still have the 2 amberlinks separated b/c they're feather eaters & I have molters. I'd love to open the coop up so everyone can get to both runs all the time.. but I don't want to take out the annexed portion in case I need it later.

I’ve also noticed that it’s the same girls, over and over, that get the mud balls. I guess they like to scratch in the wet, then the dry, then the wet, etc etc. So most of those girls have gotten used to the process. Lol

The funniest thing is how the walk after the removal, all high stepping like they just got new shoes!

Haven't decided yet. Was going to take them to the processor this month, but new babies... They're good parents so letting them raise and wean the little ones. challenge is that bacon will go into heat 10 days after the kids quit nursing. So we're still debating... Wait another six months or no?

You're a harder chick than I lol! Of course I can just chuck mice out to the girls and turn my head real quick. I totally get offing Odin before winter having to shuffle birds around in the cold is awful! That is a huge reason behind giving Cookie away, I wasn't having to shuffle yet but he was starting to challenge Negan so it was coming.

You know as soon as Bacon goes into heat those piggies are going to make more piggies without a doubt and litters don't tend to get smaller either lol! That is really a teeny window of time just ten days I thought it was longer. I wonder if you milked Bacon if it would delay her cycle? Milking a pig probably wouldn't be the easiest thing to do but I wonder if it would work.:)

@apryl29 I was worried about the feathered feet too. Thinking they would just be one glob of mud but I think mine with feathered legs and feet are cleaner. I think it's because they can feel the stuff in their feathers so they clean their feet. I still get the dirty toenails and dirty feathers on the feet but not the one massive mud clump I was expecting.

If you want a cockerel I have a few! LOL I need to decide what to do about mine. Taterhead clearly fathered one of the new boys. He looks just like him.
So option 1 is get rid of Taterhead and keep Jr and Trouble. With Trouble already being older I thought he might mold Jr into the rooster he thinks he should be.
Option 2 is get rid of Taterhead and keep the OE rooster and Trouble. I'd love to see him grow up. He's such a cool bird.
Option 3 is get rid of both older boys and keep two young ones. Not the option I'd go with... but it is an option. Any way I choose 4 boys need to go.
Have a BO and another Swedish Flower....
