Official Squatch Watchers

Question about AC's... with the females how do you know they're getting ready to lay if they don't have a red comb?

They get squatty and more friendly (mine were SO much nicer after they started laying!)

Also check the hip point distance and butthole shape, it changes...either goes from a circle to a smile or vice versa, I can't ever remember (mine would have a big frown, lolol!!!!)

ETA: Mine started laying at around 6 months, I think. They were excellent layers (despite what you read) right up until they started their first molt--which they are in now. How old is yours? Is she friendly?

Awww so cute. She wants a fuzzy baby!

The hand is getting better every day...thanks so much for asking.
@Suzi18

I was wondering how your Seramas are doing in the cold. So far I haven't added any heat. Momma and babies (babies are now 8 weeks) are in one small coop and my other Serama hen and rooster are in another small coop along with a Bantam Wyandotte. So far they seem perfectly fine. I was reading about someone up in th UP of Michigan that has Seramas and they do just fine. He just makes sure there are no drafts and tarps to keep the coop and run dry. Truthfully my Seramas aren't much smaller than my D'ucclle and she did fine last winter.

Dude, I am starting to think that all that about Seramas being frail, heat-requiring little flowers is bunk!! Seriously, my 4 original Seramas have all been doing great this fall without heat and we've had lows in the 40's, on the regular.

My baby mama Fergus and her Nuggets? They are doing excellent. I was really afraid they were gonna drop dead of the cold so I put a Sweeter Heater in the mini coop. But I've only been using it at night if the temps drop below 50. They are 3 weeks old today (I think) so if I brooded them in the Yoga (AKA Smelly Baby Chicken) Room, they would be at 80 degrees right now! And today it was in the 40's--freakin' freezing, I was on a school trip picking cranberries and about froze my hooters off--and when I got home they were all walking around outside in the run! I can't believe they weren't snuggling up in the coop!

FWIW, my d'Uccle Flower did great all winter without heat. It's the really hot, humid summer that worries me more with her.

@WVduckchick how are yours doing in the cold ? I know I've asked but I swear I'm going senile lately, lol.

Edited--as usual--for craptastic typing!

Thanks! I'll try to check out her butt some time soon. She's not very friendly at all. The other day I was trying to protect her from the meanies on the roost & I tried to pet her and she kept pecking me. I'm hoping she gets nicer after she starts laying. She was hatched around June 9th, so about 4 months now. The Lav girl isn't friendly either, but they weren't handled all that much when they were little. It's not like many of our others are super friendly either though.

I thought cranberries were bog fruit. Are the trying to circumvent child labor laws by having field trip kids pick their fruit?

It annoyed me to.. Like where do you get your original chickens if you don't get them from a hatchery, feed store, or a local farmer? This isn't minecraft, you can't just spawn a chicken by throwing an egg. I'll not say what I think b/c I don't want to get cleaned... but while it's much easier to have a hen brood chicks, chicks don't need a hen if you've got something that generates heat to stick them by.

So the weirdest thing happened to me a few weeks ago. My mom was having a problem w/ her computer and I was cleaning some crap off of it. I was asking her about this one program (don't remember the name), I never logged into anything myself. But I was looking at her add-ons in Firefox and asked her Did you install programx? and she's like yeah, blahblahblah.. Then the next day I'm at work, logged into fb and an ad for that program comes up in my feed! It was really creepy.

I'm at work, but just leave them by the door, THANKS! :D

Wow, looks like you'll barely have any scarring w/ the sutures they used. I'm surprised you don't have more swelling. Did they say how long it'll be til you're healed?

That is adorable! He's struttin' his stuff for the ladies!

She actually did have light shining on her though, she's facing a lamp. And she was a sheltered puppy that hadn't been outside until my parents got her so she wasn't all dirty and gross yet.

I guess I should be grateful that I don't have anything practice mating on my shoe.
I go back to the Dr for a recheck on the 25th. Hopefully they take the sutures out then. I am guessing 2 or3 weeks and i should be all better.

That's not bad at all. Did they make you promise to stay out of the chicken coops until you're healed?

Yeah!!!!! Incision show and tell!!

Carpal tunnel surgery, how are you feeling?
Pretty good. I can use it a little more every day. Biggest issue right now is this cold and congestion. DH and both came down with colds 4 days after my surgery. Kinda thinking we picked it up in the hospital.

Nyquil and mucinex may help. Hope you both get better soon.
