ETA... I was under the impression that sweaters on chickens kept them from being able to puff up to keep warm, like nature intended.

People keep sharing this sort of crap with me and it takes every fiber in me to politely say "Thanks, no thanks" and calmly explain why it is a bad idea and not to tell them where to shove it. It's ridiculous. I tell them that it doesn't help the chicken unless it is bald, rather it harms the chicken by 1) not allowing them to fluff up like @21hens-incharge said, 2) when they get wet, they can't get dry as quickly and they'll get cold, and 3) if the stupid thing starts to fray it could kill the bird if they eat it or get tangled in it.

Besides, I have 100 birds. I can't knit/crochet tiny sweaters for them all and monitor the fit.

Sounds like a poker game. Too many crickets come in for the winter and are having a feast on my indoor plants. Maybe guineas would eat them but, they would trash the house while doing so.

I got a message from the person who was supposed to take the boys almost 2 months ago asking if I still had them. Um, no. I did suggest watching craigslist when they're ready for them. People who bought those TSC chickens in the fall should be discovering they have roosters pretty soon.

I still have 2 OE boys.... hint hint..... he can have them.

I do sweater if they look cold and want it. I don't force it on anybody, they're welcome to just puff up. Like Hobo in my opinion needs a dang sweater but she isn't having it so she puffs up and looks miserable. Her call, I offered. I don't have a massive amount of chickens either. 100 plus chickens, nobody gets a sweater.

Exactly! I get it if you're doing it to dress them up for a few and be cute, but I cant image ever doing this long term. The string thing is a major thing too. Once I missed a thread from a feed bag and one of my girls ATE IT! It was hanging out of her mouth. My dad cut it off (I wasn't there) and she seemed fine, but now I'm really careful about it.

I still have 2 OE boys.... hint hint..... he can have them.

It was Apryl that mentioned the puffing up part.

I have sweatered one hen for a few days. Poor dear went naked when our highs were single digits.
She hated it with a passion.

Dressing 100+ birds in sweaters........that would be quite a chore.








not to mention the salmonella risk....

My little bantam as naked last fall, but it wasn't this cold and she had feathers by the time it got bad. She seemed fine otherwise. I'd like to see someone trying to dress 100 chickens in sweaters though. lol

I imagine after a few days when their pin feathers start coming it that it'd be kinda painful for them too.
