Official Squatch Watchers

Aww, that stinks! I don't help if the head end is out, just put a little olive oil on any exposed membrane and hope for the best.
That butt end has way too much going on.:hugs
Maybe I can vent here. I killed a quail chick this morning! :hit
My eggs hatched about 18 hours earlier than expected, starting at 5am this morning. They are still hatching - there's nearly 70 eggs in the incubator, of which about half have hatched.
Anyway, I chick looked stuck and the membrane was really rubbery looking. So I decided to help it out. As it was getting out of the egg, I thought the membrane was stuck to the chick so I gently helped remove the half of the shell from it's bottom end. I apparently tore a blood vessel of some sort and it bled quite a bit. I stopped the bleed with a paper towel and light pressure, and then placed the chick back in the incubator. A while later, the chick was laying dead in the incubator. It was bleeding anymore, but I think it just lost too much blood. These little quail chicks don't have much blood as it is. Now I'm extra cautious to help any others.

The chick was likely a goner anyway. Do moisten the membrane next time though. Many use olive or similar oil now.

Made a meatloaf for the first time in probably a year. I had forgotten how much I dislike making them.
I don't like grinding the meat, takes forever and spits at me.
I have never liked chopping onions and I swear I bought the strongest ones on the planet.
I do like killing crackers!
Upside used one of the girl's eggs, Beavis I think and it turned the whole thing yellow...that is a good egg!
Hopefully my slaving in the meatloaf mines are appreciated.:caf

One of the things I liked to do when visiting my folks at the lake was to put a huge minnow (think small perch 3-4" long), on a rig I had for bottom fishing. I had a foot of steel cable with a super heavy weight, a tri-swivel with another 8" line for the hook and bait. The old guy across the way had an old deep sea rod and reel that we'd attach it to. Just let the line out til the weight hit the bottom. maybe bring it up a turn or so and then lock the rod into the rod holder. Most mornings I'd have fried catfish for breakfast. Mind you this was a very small lake...

One morning I came out to check the line and that rod was bent almost double. Dad and I went over and at least I was smart enough to bring the gaff Dad wrestled with that thing for must have been an hour to get it to the retaining wall. Once I got the gaff in, it took everything I had to bring it in. Once we got it on land, I picked it up and it was taller than me (I'm 6'3") and about 8" around. We didn't have a scale, but everyone in the trailer park got a 2 pound pack of catfish fillets that morning.

There was a damn in KY that couldn't open their doors, they sent divers down who immediately came back to the surface. The reason the hydraulic doors wouldn't open was catfish were sleeping up against them. Think haggis with explosives in the stomach. Dropped em in, waited and then detonated. They had lots of 5-10 sections of catfish float to the surface.
Wow, I can't even imagine. Did you ever see anything remotely that big again?
I saw one show where they were doing something near a dam w/ catfish.. probably the same thing. I don't think they blew them up though.. It was probably that river monster show still.

Hey guys, I just found something interesting. Apparently, rats and mice can’t burp. So you can kill them with baking soda. It is even pet and wildlife safe because it is neutralized by the rat’s stomach acid. It is the second recipe listed in this article.

I need to do this. I wonder if it would hurt bunnies. I'm starting to think that my big rat trap might have caught a bun & I don't want to kill anyone else. I have an enclosed area where I caught that huge rat so I guess I can put some in there to see what happens.

The saga continues. I think he is freaking out being blind and trapped in the house alone.
He wanted me to get him Orange juice.. and bring it over tonight.. I said ok after I put up the birds and go to the fitness center....I really needed to work out to get rid of some stress ya know:barnie....
and I would call at 7 before hand.. I call and I go and HIS SON IS THERE :ya( who has chickens so he must be ok):wee
The son is a very nice man. I said it didn't make sense for both of us to be there at the same time and when was best for him... he said nights and weekends, but not every night. I said good because those were bad times for me. Son and I exchanged numbers and I told the dad I would call him at 10am. I got out of dodge.
Also the dad had called the senior services earlier, and they said they would pull the worker.. then they said it would be a long time to get another... so I guess they decide that the worker would take him to appointments and such :idunno

The guy has no money to higher help.. (unless the son footed the bill, he has a business in Chicago)... I opened up the bank and retirement mail for him:th.... if had know I wouldn't have been charging him for eggs. I had my suspicions and had given him extra eggs before when I had a ton... But he is too proud to take total freebies.
So I feel better that the son is involved, and I guess the brother was there in the afternoon too. So he was exaggerating or feeling lost or something. The family is around and not abandoning him.:clap
It's a sad story w/ a kinda happy ending, but I'm wondering if there's an underlying memory issue. My ex's gpa always complained about how he never slept, but every time we'd visit he'd be sitting at the kitchen table asleep. Then he'd nod off while we were visiting. He had no idea b/c he couldn't remember it.. so maybe w/ no visual ability to see what day it is, he may think more time is passing than really is. Someone should call him every day at a specific time and tell him what day it is. If that isn't an option then there has to be some kind of device that can be programmed to tell him that info when he presses a button. It's easy in the am to turn on the news where they tell you what day/ time is, but they don't do that as much in the evening, or on demand.

I thought about doing deliveries for meals on wheels when I first retired... then I realized someone might want me to stop and talk:barnie
I got chickens instead:oops:
Nothing at all wrong w/ that. I refused to do certain things at work b/c I'd have to interact w/ people.

We get an atmospheric river over night. The burn areas are under mud slide warnings and we have small stream advisories here.
You're getting the storm that is supposed to dump a ton of snow out this way, right? I hope it doesn't get too bad for you guys.

My weather update is just cold and a bit icy. My car had a nice coating of ice this morning, but it melted nicely.. roads weren't bad either. Stuff's coming, right now they're saying the worst of it will go south, BUT it's days away and who knows what's really going to happen. Going to refill the water and top off the food tonight in case I can't get out there tomorrow or Friday.

Snow will be over 4500 ft. in the mountains. Getting snow up there is good!

The problem will be for the majority of the area that will see the rain. The burnt areas will have mud slide danger and where I am will be local flooding.

The lakes are not full enough for river and levee flooding. That can happen in a couple of months

I have a chiefs choice meat grinder attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer. It works about as well as the big one at the meat department I used to work at.

That is sort of what i'm using but it is the kitchenaid branded grinder.
It works o.k but I have to stop several times and clean the blade and extruder. If I don't the pressure makes it spit at me.:)
