I'm not sure about the momma keeping them warm thing. If I was going to pick a bantam to hatch any eggs I would get a silky bantam they are super broody. My silky hatches all my eggs and she is a great momma
I don't want silkies, ever. Our property turns into a muddy mess from late fall-mid spring and I can't imagine silkies doing well in this environment. As their feathers aren't very waterproof. Originally, I was against having feather-footed birds at all, but I got my LF Black Cochin Roo as "free rare chick". He has done very well and does a really good keeping his fluffy feet clean. I now have 11 feather-foots (my LFBC and 10 of his Dom cross babies) but I'll be down to 5 in a few weeks. His 6 cockerel offspring are going to be freezer fodder.I'm not sure about the momma keeping them warm thing. My Sesame (Red Production) is not happy. When she see me she paces back and forth and fusses for worms relentlessly. She doesn’t seem to enjoy all her new bantam friends. I hope by Spring she makes friends. That Lemon Cuckoo is almost as big as her.
I always kept my silkies in a stall in the barn or in a chicken tractor with a wire bottom. It worked well. I love those birds!I don't want silkies, ever. I would consider getting half silkies that have proper feathers. I've heard they are still good broodies.
It's funny what we do for chickens but I found a way to get any breed your looking for and 100% sure of purityThey lady I bought the BC from also raises Silkies. When I picked out the chicks, I was only looking at colors. So I ended up with 1 Silkie by mistake. I went back to replace the Silkie (even though I kept it). 10 minutes before getting to her house she calls me and tells me she has found mites on the chicks, well I am already this close and drove 1 hour (second trip). She gave me 3 BC, only one ended up being a “Crele Orpington” which now people tell me is a Lemon Cuckoo Orpington. Crazy!!!
