It’s a good plan. We haven’t really discussed food duties. The current setup has them paying for all the groceries rather than paying rent and since we eat mostly organic, that can get pricey. But yeah, we need to have a discussion. I think this is mostly a “last straw” issue. My MIL has always been an “arm chair manager” according to my DH and SIL. Apparently once they got old enough to do the housework she quit doing any of it.

:hugs

Moral of the story, if you have vericose veins, wear long pants around your chickens.
MIL could be in charge of hamburgers on the new grill that she buys! At my house hamburgers are the equivalent to frozen dinners and other "processed" stuff.

I don’t want to encourage her to spend more money. They are on a fixed income and she’s been spending money like water since they moved into the new home.

There's been a death in the family, Klaus died today. I came over to let them out and I counted and there was only 13 so I looked in the coop and she was laying dead on the floor underneath the smaller Roost. She was already stiff and she had a full crop. So I don't know if she died sometime last night after I put her in or if she died sometime today. She was acting fine last night. Walking around normal, running, eating. She looked fine, except a spot on her back where it looked like they'd been pecking at her a bit, or possibly it was poop. I didn't look too closely but when I saw it I thought it looked like they had pecked at her. Her eyes were closed, beak shut and head down. Like she laid down then died. I guess it's possible that she could have been bitten by something. There's brown recluse spiders around here, but I wouldn't have any real way to tell if that's what happened anyway. I'm not going to do a necropsy or anything unless I lose someone else. For now I think it was just her time. She was one of the Tetra Browns I got from Tractor Supply about 2 and 1/2 years ago. One of the survivors. And now I get to tell Kyra, Klaus was her favorite.

:hugs I am really sorry.

Thanks everyone! You're right, it wasn't a bad way to go at all, esp in the chicken world. I'm stopping over tomorrow morning to check on them to make sure they're all still alive. Somewhat worried about Olive now. Not that there's anything wrong with her that I've noticed but the fact that she is Karissa's absolute favorite chicken and she would be completely devastated if anything happened to her.
