I want to convert the big quail cage to hold sand. It’s all wire on a wooden frame. It’s 5’x3’, but only holds three birds right now. I feel like it’s wasted space and want to put the other three birds in it.
My plan is to divide it in half at the door so I can still reach into both sides without having to make extra doors. Maybe I’ll put bead board in the bottom, but I don’t know how to keep the sand from just pouring out the seams. Should I caulk? I don’t know if they’ll pick at it. And then there’s that caulk smell.

Keep in mind you'll have both pens open with only one door. So say the hinges are on the left and you need in the left side pen. The right side pen will still be open so you can access the left. Quail are quick little birds that could sneak past you. You'll want some way to have one pen closed and the other open.

Good point. I’m glad I’m asking before I start, this time. :lol:

This is the little blind baby? Car ride? She sure is a cutie.

@Fishychix I agree...1 cage section 1 door each.

We are currently 33° with a feels like of 23. Yup brrrrrr after our record breaking highs.

The dog kennels are a soupy soggy mess so...7 bags of shavings have been spread. River will not willingly step in mud. I don't particularly like mud drug in the house either. Shavings sweep up easily. Next year I am bringing in about 10 tons of squeegee. That would be like pea gravel with a size max of 3/16ths of an inch. I am not playing with shavings and mud next year.

But that way when you open the door, birds can fly out both sides. You can put a strip of wood on top of both pieces and screw them on. No caulk needed.

Have you tried horse stall pellets in the run?
