Wow. I haven’t been around since the beginning of November when we had that boar turn up unexpectedly.
Well, as i said, we did the first 10 of the 23 Cornish X we got around Thanksgiving. It was a fricken disaster. I forgot that I wanted to order a cone big enough for CX, but I didn’t. It made it so much harder to bleed them out. My brother wanted to try chopping heads but didn’t have the stomach for it and my mom wasn’t around to the the primary throat slitter. Because I had to run back and forth to slit throats and eviscerate, it took about 3.5 hours to do 10 birds. Half of the birds also dislocated one or both their wings in their death throes without a cone. I also cut myself with my knife twice. I healed up alright.
Fortunately, even with the brutal cold, we didn’t lose any birds between the two butcherings. Today was much better. I bought a cone, I won’t do a butcher day again without a throat slitter. We did 13 birds in 2.5 hours. We did have one bird that took a very long time to completely die. It was ginormous. He was just over 8lbs. He was the size of a small Turkey. The smallest bird was 4.6lbs. They were all pretty nice sized.
We also had to get a new (to us) car, van to be precise. The minivan worked, but the kids were all crammed in so close together and were constantly messing with each other. Our mechanic had this 12 passenger van he bought off the food bank that he was fixing up yo sell. It was a good deal. We’re able to put all the kids in the car with a space between them. It is wonderful! We call it the Paddy Wagon because before it was owned by the food bank, it was owned by the state penitentiary and was used for prisoner transport. It’s a 2010 GMC Savana with 113k miles on it. It’s bare bones, but still in great shape. We kept our minivan because, sometimes, we need two vehicles. We’re having to go through and buy duplicate car seats to make things easier but it will work fine for us for the next few years. We’ll save up and get something more modern with head rests on the seats as this one doesn’t have them and it isn’t really safe to have kids without high back boosters in it.
