hmmmm we may be cut from the same cloth I've never made any good beer, but I did pretty good on Rum, bourbon and a few others. Even came really close with tequila.

Just for the record... Never did it in the US. I did publish and sell a bunch of cookbooks though.

ETA: Was bored looking through the library and found an 18th century survival guide, which included the basics. And it started my new hobby back then.
