Official Squatch Watchers

OK, so I need a bit of advice from you (more) seasoned chickenheads.

I think my broody girl Olive, gave up. Like 2 or 3 days before the hatch. Which sucks, b/c she's been sitting for maybe 6 weeks and I really think she deserves to hatch out these eggs.

Anyway, my other silkie, Phoebe Buffay, is now sitting on those eggs as of this AM. I also have a Brahma girl sitting, and in my other coop, a broody Cemani who is kinda fierce.

So....should I just let Phoebe sit on them now? Should I try slipping half of them under my Brahma? Should I try to put Olive in my hospital coop/brooder in the garage with all the eggs, and see if she resumes interest in her eggs?

I can always try sticking some under my Cemani. And if all else fails I still have space in my bator. I just don't know if once the interest in brooding declines, can they get it back? Or is that it?

I so wanted her to hatch ot those eggs. In any event, I wanted one of my hens to brood out the chicks in the coop. Is it too late to hope that a different one will do that with 2 days left to go?

I'm gonna set up an emergency brooder that is ready to go, just in case. But I so want to see a mama hen with some chicks. What to do?

Thanks in advance, you smart little Squatchers. :)

:pop This is going to be good. (for me)
I have no clue what to do.
I think I would move the eggs under another broody asap.

I would pick a broody and give them to her. Just make sure she sits.

In my experience once they give up the hormone shift has begun.
It is not likely or even much of a maybe that she will take the chicks.

Even my uber broody bantam won't accept chicks unless she has been actively sitting for about 18 days.
If slipping eggs close to hatching under a broody best to do it after she has been setting a long while.

If giving chicks best that she has been sitting at least 2 weeks.

Its all about hormones. :barnie

This is good info...I would not have thought that it would be better to slip the eggs under the other one, one that had been sitting for a longer period of time.
Thanks!

I am definitely willing to try some musical coop action (so to speak) BUT the only other housing I have is my itty bitty hospital coop. I can only put two birds in there and I have three problem girls. So I was thinking maybe I should rehome someone right away? Then try to improve the dynamics of the rest??? But I cannot decide who to get rid of. Should I rehome

A. The white cochin. She is single mindedly focused on the death of the barred cochin but nice to everyone else. She doesn't have much personality so I wouldn't miss her much.

B. Ana the ISA brown. She is causing problems with everyone by pulling feathers... but she also is like a little puppy around me and I love her. :hit

:barnie:barnie:barnie So many options and I don't know what to do. But that is why I appreciate all the help :) Thank you friends!
Unfortunately I would get Ana out of there

Aldi is fairly new to me.
I've only been once and I was quite surprised I have to pay to use the grocery cart and then they made me buy grocery bags and pack my own groceries.
I didn't mind but I was just surprised that a grocery store did that.
Are all Aldi's like this?
Yes and their fruit and vegetables taste like chemicals

Although only in the low 30’s with knee deep snow I threw all the shavings out of the coop. They are now in a big pile just outside the pop door.

Once everyone has settled for the night I’m going to go take the nest boxes. They were to busy fighting over them for me to do it now. My little broody is determined to sit. Even if another hen disturbs her she walks around fluffed up clucking. Then jumps right back in and settles down again.

Thanks!

Only slip eggs in close to hatch for a broody having sat a few weeks.

If its new eggs not close to hatch you want a fresh broody. One that has been sitting 5 days or so.

Hens are so fickle and broodies way more so!
