Well, I had the chickens out last night, and Gurtrude decided to dribble egg all over the place, including DHs chair (no, DH doesn't know, why would I tell him, we cleaned it up :lau ) After I figured out what was going on, I picked her up, gave a decent squeeze and got the rest of the shell-less egg expelled, with 2 and a half eggs worth of membrane. She's getting feathers in, but hasn't lost any for a few days. She also gave us a shelled egg 3 days ago. I gave her 4 tums, since she isnt eating her oyster shell that much. So do you figure I should continue with the tums until she starts eating oyster shell again, or do I just let her system work itself out. It's more of a messy inconvenience than a needing the eggs, so I want to do what is best for her. She's also being irregular with her laying recently, and we don't have an exact age for her. We know she molted after she found us, and didn't lay for 5 mos, and she didn't molt again for over 18 mos, and it still hasn't been a full molt.

Let me know your opinions, please.

:hugs:hugs:hugs:love:love:love to everyone, and I'm glad I only have to deal with my mom on a regular basis. My dad is in the midwest, only comes out once a year, and has my brother 3 hrs away, and his brothers within 40 mins of him. They will take care of him decently. I never had MIL or FIL, only BILs and SILs, and they all live relatively close to each other and the rest of their families, so we don't have to deal with that. As it is, they are all older than me by several to 30+ years, and of the 6 of them, only 2 remain. Again, they are all in the midwest, except one in Nevada, and even that one has family there. My parents are aggravating enough as it is, I'm glad I don't have to deal with inlaws.

Have a good one everybody.:frow

Are there raccoons? Netting should protect against hawks but not raccoons. You likely have a raccoon proof coop that they go into at night.

Netting would not stop a fox in the daytime.

The net is over a carport frame just for arial coverage. There is WW fence around the bottom.

:bowTo the cleanliness of your coop!
Ha! It must be the lighting. I shovel it out about once a week. The cobwebs could capture a bantam hen.

The tums question....I say yes most definitely keep it up.

Okay squatchers. Our level of chicken expertise is varied.

I have a friend whom I met here on BYC who has an (actually2 ) Indian leghorn rooster with THE MOST GINORMOUS set of comb and wattles imaginable.
The birds body is quite small in comparison to the size of his equipment. It has greatly impaired his ability to see food and to eat and drink, and actually rubs his eyeball. Dubbing this creature in my opinion should only be attempted by a veterinarian if at all. But the area where the owner is is so remote there either are none or none that would be willing to do it for what they could afford to pay in a lifetime.
Do any of you know another member who might be a good resource about this procedure?

Poor thing. She may have something going on inside. I would give one tums a day for a week. Does she eat a lot of treats? If so limit them. Layer feed only and see if that helps get things back on track.
