Well, decided to change the bulb that shines on the chickens to a daylight bulb. I'm hoping that helps Gurtrude with calcium absorption so she can start producing shells on her eggs. I'm not overly concerned about lack of shell, it's better than no eggs at all... at least I don't have to worry about internal laying. She's also been a little more tired, but I'm also attributing that to a lack of vitamin D. If the change in lighting doesn't work, I'll start supplementing the vitamin D. She's still molting as well, but hasn't been all that interested in oyster shell, which is what makes me think she's lacking the vitamin D. She still had a third of her feathers that need to be replaced, so I know she won't be laying regularly, but last time she looked she wasn't laughing at all, though that could have been because she was too young. Again, I'm not overly worried, just methodically working on what the shell department is missing. Without the shell department working, the ready of the system is moving faster, and I've had some messes with no yolks and some messes that are just albumen with no membrane.

So much fun...:barnie:he

Cappy, keep an eye on this storm radar looks pretty ominous just south of you.

Anansi, too high a concentration of oats & barley can inhibit nutrient absorption (not suggesting that's your issue, just putting it out there), also an imbalance in the amino acids can have a similar affect. A boiled egg yolk has the perfect balance of amino acids for chickens. I'd also increase her protein to help her through her molt.

Has anyone heard from @staceyj ? Starting to worry about her...

I'll start giving her some yolks. She doesn't get anything other than leather feed, freeze dried and live mealworms, and maybe a tablespoon of cracked corn a week. Lizbeth gets the same. I cut way down on the corn after finding out that it can cause fatty liver and early death. The freeze dried mealworms are maybe a tablespoon daily, and even then, that is more air than anything else, and live superworms are 10 or 11 every 2 or 3 days. I'm doing my best to make sure their feed is 90% or more of their daily intake, I want them around for a very long time. Eggs are a perk, not a requirement, so even if Gurtrude doesn't smell them on a regular basis, as long af she's not laying internally, I'll be happy.

I haven't seen Stacey all day.
I am hoping it's that they are conserving generator fuel.

I am worried about all ya'll east of me!

If she's interested in the superworms you can gut load them with vitamin D. I get the liquid stuff for reptiles put it on fruit and feed the worms for Marlene. She dosen't make the best shells but she is at least making shells now.:)

Melon of any sort seems to soak up and get eaten the fastest. Iv'e had luck with apple too. Berries don't do so hot. :)
That's an idea, or I can use liquid vit D to get the worms wet and toss them in crushed vit D tablets... I think I'll do the liquid and crushed tablet, and try to gut load it just means I have to move some to another container and get some fresh fruit. Any recommendations for the fruit?

It is fortunate that i watered the quail well yesterday, only one gallon waterer needed refilled today. Not many eggs today, guess they may be laying later in the day.
It has been raining off and on at times, and there was a hurricaine watch north of us and possible flooding in our county.
