Molpet, thank you for the morning random thought. I'll give Gurtrude 2000 iU starting tonight if she doesn't pick up her intake of oyster shell during the day. I'll also try to hunt down a full spectrum bulb for the light they have if she's still being funky about her eggs.

In the meantime, dogs got me up way too early to go outside, so back to bed with 2 little snugglers. The big boy will come plop on DH's side of the bed soon.

On a :he:he:rant:rant We have people building on the lot next door, and the guys doing the rebar for the foundation have been using our driveway. I actually had to ask them to move their truck so I could leave on Thursday and Friday. Today they were just getting here, so I asked them not to use our driveway. They wanted to use it to unload the rebar and have an easier time getting it in the hole they're working in. We already have damage to the driveway from the construction, and DH asked the property owner to not have construction crews use our driveway. It wouldn't be so :he:he:rant:rant if the guys moved their truck after offloading, but seriously!!! You're gonna leave your truck parked in a driveway that obviously leads to a house that is not part of the property being built on. :barnie:barnie Someone doesn't know what common courtesy is. What on earth makes them think it's ok to block the neighbor's driveway, requiring them to be asked to move their truck just so the neighbor can go about their business and go someplace without being inconvenienced by them.:mad::mad: The new neighbors seem ok so far from what we've seen, but this particular bunch of contractors are not very courteous and have to be asked to not remain parked in our driveway. After having to move their truck twice, you would think they'd figure it out. Obviously, we are not working with quick learners...:he:he:he:rant:rant:rant:mad::mad::mad:

Rant over, see y'all in a few hours. :hugs:hugs:hugs:love:love:love
I think i would be putting a barrier at the end of the driveway. Easier to move saw horses when you want to get out than go find someone to get a truck. They are just ignorant.

I would be blocking off my driveway forthwith.

You guys!!!

The most amazing and coolest thing happened to me today. It was like a freaking Disney moment.I can't stop thinking and talking about it; I know my husband is sick of hearing about it! But it's something that has probably never happened to 99.5% of people.

So I got a kayak. And today I took it (her?) out for its maiden voyage, down Cedar Creek by my house. I've never kayaked before, only canoeed. Anyway....

I started going down the creek along the banks, where all the cedar and pine trees grow and hang over into the water And I heard this little sound, like a baby, or a cat crying. "Meeew, meeew, meeew"... a little squeak. I paddled on, and kept hearing it.

I turned around and looked, and it was this little tiny beaver swimming in the water, about the size of a squirrel.

It followed me about ten, twenty feet as I paddled. I stopped and grabbed onto a bush and started talking to it. It kept making its little noise, and then swam up to me alongside the kayak! It looked at me with its round beady eyes and let me pet it. Then it went up onto a log and sat down. It washed its face, drank some water, and looked at me.

I just sat there and held my breath. "Come here, little beaver," I said to it. "Come over here." It swam over to me again. It let me pet it again.

And then....it let me pick it up. I picked it up, put it in my kayak, and petted it. It was small and sleek and shiny, and had a rubbery paddle tail. I felt like I was tripping on acid, it was so crazy. I briefly thought "I hope this critter doesn't have rabies" (I didn't realize--having never seen a beaver before--that it was just a baby).

After a moment, it decided it had enough lovin', waddled to the front of the kayak-- rubber paddle tail waggling back and forth--jumped off, and slipped back into the creek. It was an amazing and awesome moment that I really still can't believe happened. I wanted so badly to snap a picture but my phone was in a dry bag.

This is what it looked like, but tiny (mine was way cuter, too):

It was an otherworldly experience, I can't even describe it. It's rare that something wild in nature interacts with a human like that. I wanted to take it home with me; it was precious.

You know I am going to revisit that part of the creek a million times, to try to see it again. I fell in love with that baby beaver. I hope it lives a long, beautiful life.

XO

PS: Here is a photo that is closer to what it looked like (but teensy). So, so cool!

That's so amazing! I'm super jealous.

Tell me about it! Iv'e got molting going on a pullet nearing point of lay, four preteens, and a weirdo rooster and they're all doing really well all around. I have no urge at all to take in four heathen devil hens that love to peck to the dang bone and you can't even look at without them freaking out. I am not a flippin chicken whisperer.:barnie
AMEN!

Baby Beaver Update:

Didn't see him. :( I was calling him and making the mewling baby beaver noises, but no luck. Maybe next time!

But we did see a gigantic snapping turtle where we took out the canoe at the park, who people were feeding Cheetos to. It was cool.

You know I'll be going back to that beaver place over and over, until the creek freezes up, in hopes I'll see that cute little bugger again
I bet the mama beaver scolded the baby beaver for running around w/ a human.

Lol! I had a cat eat a pound of canadian bacon. Don't ya'll hate it when you smell crap and figure out the smell is on you? Lulu dropped a big old steamer in my robe hood.:sick Btw rain turns chickens into taterholes...this was the bright spot of roost time.:)View attachment 1536177 View attachment 1536178 View attachment 1536179
That happened to me on Saturday. I was walking from the coop back to the swingy seat thing and thought Whoa, someone dropped a rank one.. then realized that I was the one who smelled. I stepped in some and got it on my leg when I crossed my legs on the swing. That's what I get for wanting to be comfortable.

How rude. They should really know better. If you're really upset you could call the company and complain that they should ask permission before parking in someone else's drive way, even if the person you're working for tells them that they won't mind. It's common courtesy. Plus, these days everyone is suspicious.

It might be time to call a sheriff to talk to them and the owner

Well guys, I have some interesting news. We will probably be getting two American Guinea hog barrows (neuterd males) piglets in a month! Since we haven't done pigs before we figured that going with feeder males would be a good place to start. If we don't like them, we eat them! The piglets will be about 2 months when we pick them up. These are pics from when they were 3 days old.

That is the breed we had, be we had 3 sows.

The Great Eggsperiment, Day 10:

The 4 mystery eggs are all moving and grooving! Now that I cleared out the bator, I put the automatic turner back in. It's a PITA to remember to turn the eggs throughout the day, and I have menopause brain.

The Fergus (Serama) egg is Day 5 or 6 (I put the egg in bator the morning it was laid, so does that count as the first day? If so, she is Day 6.) That one is developing slower than usual, but it is moving. So far it's still a spider, but I think I can see an eye, and it's a slow mover. I don't have high hopes for that one, but it was really an afterthought, as the whole point was to try to preserve any of Lafayette's spawn.

I really want some little black babies! I wish I had X-ray eyes and could see inside the shells. I can't wait for hatch day!!

Will post pics later....have to go to the doctor, and it's hubby's BD today, so I have to get him a card (he already got his present which was the canoe).

See y'all later! XO

:hugs & :fl to those who need them.
Florence's rain is just hitting us here in NE Ohio. I work in a windowless office so I've no idea what's happening, besides rain.
I saw a post on fb about Wilmington being inaccessible..

Glad to hear everyone's doing ok. Hopefully power stays on where it is, and comes back on quickly for those w/o it.
I spent most of the weekend at my parent's so the chickens were able to be free most of the weekend (some toads/ frogs lost their lives this weekend, but others were saved). I tossed a bag of sand in the run. It's a very light layer, but I figure they'll work that into the mud over the next day and then I'll toss more out this weekend. I've got some work to do in the coop and run to get things ready for winter. More support for the cover and we need more roost space since *someones* can't use the other 3/4 of the roost and have to crowd on one spot. Toothless has figured out she can use the roost on the left side w/o being harassed. The other 3 are still huddling in the nesting boxes.
The person who said they wanted my boys never contacted me about getting them this weekend. Not sure if they still want them, but I'm not about to beg them to take them if they don't want them.
I found a car. It was pretty much a miracle that we found it. It's from Alabama and looks amazing. I'm really excited. We go pick it up tonight. I'm really happy I won't have to deal w/ a car payment or full coverage insurance. It needs a bit of work, but since it's not all rusted out it'll be worth it to fix it.
