The Great Eggsperiment, Day 10:

The 4 mystery eggs are all moving and grooving! Now that I cleared out the bator, I put the automatic turner back in. It's a PITA to remember to turn the eggs throughout the day, and I have menopause brain.

The Fergus (Serama) egg is Day 5 or 6 (I put the egg in bator the morning it was laid, so does that count as the first day? If so, she is Day 6.) That one is developing slower than usual, but it is moving. So far it's still a spider, but I think I can see an eye, and it's a slow mover. I don't have high hopes for that one, but it was really an afterthought, as the whole point was to try to preserve any of Lafayette's spawn.

I really want some little black babies! I wish I had X-ray eyes and could see inside the shells. I can't wait for hatch day!!

Will post pics later....have to go to the doctor, and it's hubby's BD today, so I have to get him a card (he already got his present which was the canoe).

See y'all later! XO
I was just about to ask how the eggs were doing. So exciting. I could barely see anything when my chick was growing. It was basically a spider web of veins, then all black, then a chick appeared. I cannot wait to see what you end up with.

Molpet, thank you for the morning random thought. I'll give Gurtrude 2000 iU starting tonight if she doesn't pick up her intake of oyster shell during the day. I'll also try to hunt down a full spectrum bulb for the light they have if she's still being funky about her eggs.

In the meantime, dogs got me up way too early to go outside, so back to bed with 2 little snugglers. The big boy will come plop on DH's side of the bed soon.

On a :he:he:rant:rant We have people building on the lot next door, and the guys doing the rebar for the foundation have been using our driveway. I actually had to ask them to move their truck so I could leave on Thursday and Friday. Today they were just getting here, so I asked them not to use our driveway. They wanted to use it to unload the rebar and have an easier time getting it in the hole they're working in. We already have damage to the driveway from the construction, and DH asked the property owner to not have construction crews use our driveway. It wouldn't be so :he:he:rant:rant if the guys moved their truck after offloading, but seriously!!! You're gonna leave your truck parked in a driveway that obviously leads to a house that is not part of the property being built on. :barnie:barnie Someone doesn't know what common courtesy is. What on earth makes them think it's ok to block the neighbor's driveway, requiring them to be asked to move their truck just so the neighbor can go about their business and go someplace without being inconvenienced by them.:mad::mad: The new neighbors seem ok so far from what we've seen, but this particular bunch of contractors are not very courteous and have to be asked to not remain parked in our driveway. After having to move their truck twice, you would think they'd figure it out. Obviously, we are not working with quick learners...:he:he:he:rant:rant:rant:mad::mad::mad:

Rant over, see y'all in a few hours. :hugs:hugs:hugs:love:love:love

OMG! What utter and complete taterholes!!! I woulda been all in their faces and that would have been the first and last time that happened! I'd tell em they do it again you're calling the cops for trespassing....jerks.

I freaking HATE rude people. I hate them. It is like my biggest pet peeve.

Yesterday we were canoeing down the creek, and went under an overpass where there were some kids hanging out. As we started going through it, one of the kids chucked an empty beer can in the water right in front of us. I was like WTF??!! I stuck my paddle out, pushed it to the side of the boat, and grabbed it. Turned around and yelled up "What is wrong with you??! Don't litter! Littering is bad!! Jesus Christ." I was pissed.

Some old piney on the banks yelled over "Way to go sister, you have my total respect for picking up that can!"

I hope it embarrassed them and made them think. Remember that old commercial with the Indian paddling through the trash, with the single tear running down his face! (yeah, I'm old. But I know all you old farts remember that, lol, it was a great commercial.) Every time I see trash in the creek I tell my DH "The Indian is crying here."

Rude people. Litterbugs. Arrrggghhh. :old

Edited for misspelling "farts," lol.

Well guys, I have some interesting news. We will probably be getting two American Guinea hog barrows (neuterd males) piglets in a month! Since we haven't done pigs before we figured that going with feeder males would be a good place to start. If we don't like them, we eat them! The piglets will be about 2 months when we pick them up. These are pics from when they were 3 days old.

O.M.G.!!!!!!

That is like the cutest thing I ever saw!! Kiss those big rubbery snoots for me! (when you get them that is).:love:love:love Adorable.

Well, I picked up 10 tins of . At 3 sardines per tin, that is 30 days of fish. The plan is 1 sardine per day, coated with 1000 IU of vit D. I will give her other treats with the vit D to keep her from getting overly bored, as well as adding it to a syringe of baby food every so often. Gurtrude definitely likes sardines. We will see how things go. :pop:pop:pop

Anansi, what is wrong with Gurtrude? I must have missed that post. Is she laying shell-less eggs?

Yep, Gurtrude is laying messes, including albumen with no membrane, then an actual egg with yolk and albumen in a membrane, and occasionally a completely discombobulated mess. The calcium department seems to be on vacation and the rest of the assembly line is all out of whack. I would be more concerned if she wasn't sending yolks down the chute, but still, a fully formed, functional containment vessel would be nice. It would be great if the shell department would get back to work. At this point, even a little effort from that department would be appreciated.

So much for my nap, haven't been able to get back to sleep because I'm irritated with the tater construction crew. I'm not willing to stop trying though, I refuse to get up for the day until the alarm clock goes off or there is an emergency. Besides, the two little dogs are too comfy and cute to disturb.:love

Glad to hear Stacey is doing ok, keeping dry and has gas for the genny.

Rae, MD will love the piggies, so eating them may not work out to well. Giving them pork related names might not work either, especially if you plan to have pork for dinner or bacon. You might need to rename piggies in a blanket meals as well. Hopefully he doesn't get a sudden aversion to pork, hence the reason for the caution with pork related names for the piglets and foods with the root word "pig."

Ok, gonna try for an hour of sleep. :fl

They will probably get cuddles and scritches. I'm not so sure about kisses yet.

He's already been introduced to the idea that animals are meat. He has watched me slaughter chickens a time or two already. I'm not keeping pet pigs unless we like them and we keep breeders. Even the breeders keep will eventually be food once they are no longer a part of our breeding program (if we get into breeding them). I may just stick to getting feeders from this lady. She and her husband are the ones that bought my Delawares off me. They are really happy with the Delawares. I'll see if they want any meat birds in the future. I will be a good relationship to keep up.

We are just starting to get real rain from the hurricane. It's been spitting for the past 24 hours and it has finally started getting serious.

On a funny note, @WVduckchick, I'm really glad I have those bantam cross girls now. The reason is that the Milk Drinker is a LOT more willing to eat "tiny eggies" than full sized ones. All I have to do is say "Tiny eggy" and he grabs the hard boiled banty egg and eats it up in a jiff.
