Soooooo I got the rat out of the hole. I was wrong, I'd had it by the back leg, not the head. The thing is HUGE! Of course I took a picture.. Anyone want to see?
ETA: it's on a garden rake for scale.
(I'm hoping I got the spoiler thing to work correctly)

It's at least 8" long. I packed the hole in and I figure if there is another one it'll dig out the hole. I also caught another field mouse.
Big rat. Where you see one, there are usually more though.

I'm hoping it's a bachelor.. I've killed a bunch of the small black rats, but I don't think they were this thing's children. I reset the traps & I'm hoping to catch any other huge ones before it gets too wintery here.

@apryl29

Was it a Male or a female?
I didn't look. I was slightly afraid that it wasn't really dead and that it might suddenly move. It was getting dark so I couldn't get a good clear picture of it. I hope it didn't have babies under there, but for how long I've seen those holes, it probably did. I hope the chickens eat them.

If it was a male, he would have a big honking lonnng set of balls on him.

Well, hell... If she did have babies I'm really hoping they drowned in the rain, or my chickens eat them. I'll keep setting traps. I might have to get more small traps, I only have 2 and those I've been putting outside by a tree. I need some closer to the coop.
I had a hamster like that once... He was nice, but dayum! I bought him for my daughter's 6th bday & his name was Daisy until she decided to take a bath and pulled out some parts to clean them that she shouldn't have had. Then his name was changed to Hammy.

I hate wild rodents, but my siblings have had several fancy rats as pets. They are much more personable and WAY smarter then guinea pigs (I hate guinea pigs, they are stupid squealers) and learn not to pee on you when they are used to being handled.
I could not agree more. My brother had 2 guinea pigs and the squealed alllll the time! I was so happy when he got rid of them. We typically just have hams, though my daughter wants to get a mouse, which I'm not against... I feel bad getting only 1, but I'm not having mouse babies.

After a certain age, mice are easy to sex. The males have OBVIOUS sacks. I would get all males if you could.
