Actually, it isn't odd at all. The lungs are stuck to the ribs along either side of the spine, and the kidneys are stuck to the back along either side of the spine below the ribs all the way to the tail. They are tricky to get out by hand, but I do it. There is a reason why there is such a thing as a lung rake for processing.

@pitbullmomma, Don't get upset with me for mentioning lung rakes.

That sounds like more trouble than it is worth. I would rather buy a gluten free Frechetta pizza at wally world.
It is cool to be able to get the lungs out all in one piece!

I get them with my fingers

Right?

Ok.. now I remember. Good luck!

Hush!

Oh wow. I guess I don't normally buy the entire bird so I've never seen this. Actually I can think of once that I bought a frozen roaster chicken but I ended up tossing it out after it sat in the bottom of my deep freeze for 3 years. Sounds gross, but I guess there's people who don't mind. I know my SIL cracks open the bones and eats the marrow, but she grew up in the Philippines and they ate everything b/c food was scarce.
Even the three year old frozen bird would not be bad...It might taste a bit odd though.

I liked this meme. :lau

Ok, not all of my chickens are pretty and I wish the mail lady could have seen what I just witnessed they do most definitly act like chickens. I have been sitting on Marlene nursing a comb bite. She tried eating with Hobo. She got the stare, didn't move. She got the growl, didn't move. I knew what was coming, Hobo just locked on to that floppy little comb while she was eating, she moved then. Perfect Hobo mouth shaped chunk gone, blood everywhere. Other bowls out there but she just had to try it, she's the former top hen so she pushes Hobo from time to time it never works out.:idunno

I dug it out when my youngest tested allergic to chicken so we didn't eat chicken for years so I wasn't to interested in cooking it by that point anyway. I'm certain I could start my own ecoli outbreak w/ some of the stuff in my freezer. The other day I found a bit of a holiday ice cream roll, from last year. Oops.

There are 3 Ohioans here.....Apryl, Nunny and myself. RJ can keep the lovely gift we sent him
It's an early xmas gift. It's rude to return them, but you can regift it to someone else if it doesn't suit you.

Oh wow. I noticed that Toothless, the cemani mix had some spots on her comb where she'd been pecked. Why can't they all just get along?

It can be a problem trying to figure out what is in the Freezer!

I know lol! For the most part everybody does here. The littles get pecked if they're in the way but that is normal. Hobo is top dog though, she doesn't get along with anyone she doesn't have to. I remember I felt bad when I got her because she was always alone.:gig
