well I used a quart of grape seed oil that expired in 2013 for the bucket trap... (see that garbage I hadn't thrown out comes in handy) :celebrate
the video showed putting a quart of peanut oil in the bucket trap...
I had in less than 20 hrs... 2 adult mice dead with 2 young ones sitting on top of the body's shivering :barnie.. no chipmunks
since the oil was rancid I put the young in between 2 other buckets half full of water and drowned them, threw the bodies away... no racid mice for my chickies

In case someone else wants to use this outside , peanut oil would not be a good choice since it turns solid at 37F

Very interesting! I'm glad it's worked for you. I wondered about the whole "as the dead pile up wouldn't the others use them as something to stand on" aspect of it, but I would expect the same thing to happen no matter how deep the water/ oil is b/c they'd float.

Well, I now know how to flush a crop successfully. Gurtrude's crop wasn't emptying, so I tried to get her to puke it up, but apparently it was too thick. I added water, massaged enough to mix it well, added more water and had her give it all up. Repeated several times and got stuff out that may have been inhibiting the proper emptying. Finally got mostly water, gave her a dose of nutridrench, her meds and about 1 1/2 tsp of the baby food/layer feed mix, and am calling it good. I'll check on her later and see if her system is working properly again. Pretty sure Gurtrude isn't happy with me at the moment, but at least she's not sitting there with stuff turning in to overdone mash in her crop. I doubt it would make good moonshine, and she doesn't need to be an alcoholic anyhow.

Other than that, life is still throwing us frustration with the neighbors and playing havoc with DD#3. We're waiting on to hear from the neurologist, as she had an EEG today, which actually turned out to be good timing since she started having non-epileptic seizures on Monday. We did some research and think she might have narcolepsy on top of everything else. Poor kid can't catch a break. Her service dog figured out the scent she gives off before a seizure and was alerting her by Tuesday, and we've figured out some of the triggers. Unfortunately, the neurologist is the one who will prescribe any medications, so until then she's stuck at home unless she has an appt, and then she's confined to a wheel chair for her safety because she can have them almost every five minutes. I took her to the ER, and they did enough of a workup to let us know they aren't epileptic, and not life threatening, just inconvenient and frustrating. So, we wait.

The water utility people are coming tomorrow to determine exactly where the damage to the water line is, whose house it runs to and how it got damaged. The idiot that just about electrocuted himself with the backhoe was back, and brought manual labor with him, didn't want to listen about the water line, tried to tell me to talk to the dude who owns the lot they are laying the conduit for. I beat him to it last week and was told that it's the idiots responsibility. So I called the water utility and told them to send someone today to talk to the taterhole so he didn't backfill where the damage is. When I got back from the EEG with DD#3, they had the road right in front of my driveway dig up, DD#3 was tired, hungry and upset, which resulted in seizures. I told them they needed to finish in front of the driveway so I could get to my house, they offered to put a piece of plywood across so I walk up. I told them that was not an option because DD#3 would need to be in her wheelchair. Basically, idiot decided since they had a permit, they weren't required to make sure I had access to my house, or let me know when they were going to dig in front of it for that matter. No, they did not have steel plates so they could work without preventing me from coming and going. If the appointment had been later in the day, we would have missed it, and if we needed to go to the emergency room, we wouldn't have been able to. The only way to get to our house from the road was to go across the trench. DH told them he's tired of their crap, since this idiot has a reputation of tatering things up with utilities and other things, and that if needed, he could retain a lawyer by close of business today. The crap they're pulling is very stressful and has kept me up all night several times, and is now a trigger for DD#3. Honestly, I like the Hispanic guys that were doing the building, and the Ukrainian homeowners can go play in an oversized rodent water trap. At least the Hispanic guys let us know when they were doing something overly loud, started later than normal, kept their stereo facing away from our house, and made sure people weren't using our driveway to deliver supplies to the property.

So, tomorrow I'll be calling the county building inspector and file some complaints. Would have done it today, but you know, it's too inconvenient for then to be available all 5 business days, and Weds is the day they choose to be closed.

I am so sorry my friend. Anyone of those issued would be bad enough, but altogether is just horrible. Your family and chickens are so lucky to have you and I hope things turn around for you soon. :hugs

the bodies tend to roll and eventually they get tired... kinda sad, but faster than a glue trap.... the young had the hind feet on the bottom and front feet and chest on the bodies, stabilising themselves. I felt sorry for them, but just sorry enough to get some more oil

Yeah, I can't handle glue traps. They seem to end up catching unintended creatures more often than they catch intended ones. Toothless got caught in a fly strip & I'm just glad I was there when it happened b/c it could have been bad. Not sure what I'm going to do next year... I doubt she can get that much air now, but I'm not about to risk it. I have several who like to take flight when I open the door to let them out.

Those smelly bag traps work really well. They are nasty but damn they work!

yes those work great on flies... but I had a whole ecosystem going on in one.. it stunk so I put off empty it and children hatched out feeding on their parents. :sick sorta cool though

bald faced hornets also like to eat flies... and the woodpecker tore open the bald faced hornet nest late fall and stole the young

Yay for the woodpecker. I'm so sick of stingy bitey flying things. That's the only good part about winter, though when we had the warm spell a while back when it was in the 50's I saw a MOSQUITO! :rant:he:mad:

yeah I was glad, but I was glad when I seen a bald face hrnet grab a fly too...
the hornets built a big nest 15 ft above a chicken coop though .. when I went to take down the shade cloth, there were a couple on the cloth last fall... They hadn't bothered me so I flipped them over the fence in the sun.
