On the plus side she is a great mamma and is keeping the others close. I’m not sure what would have possessed them to squeeze through the bars and leave her. At least the flock didn’t go after them. Unfortunately the cold did.
I am so sorry!

One of the quail that hatched yesterday was out from under the brooder plate. It was complaining but fine though. The seem to be very tough little things!

PHOENIX – Virulent Newcastle disease has been found in an Arizona chicken flock for the first time since the outbreak began last year in California.

It’s been found in Arizona near Flagstaff in a backyard flock of eight birds, and tests show the strain is part of the Southern California outbreak.

Arizona state veterinarian Peter Mundschenk said the Department of Agriculture is working to find the source and keep it contained.

“It’s pretty much been in backyard birds, but they’ve had a couple spillovers into the commercial flocks in the areas,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to prevent by having the surveillance zone so we don’t get the spread of the disease like California’s had.”

Mundschenk said they will keep looking in a 1 kilometer area around where the disease was found to locate the source. One source could be a chicken keeper – someone trying to protect birds from quarantine in California – who brought them to Arizona, Mundschenk said....https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2019...czRgoPFBbFT7DtN2HYLNUeQkXxUk1in7ynw8JSWvkP_sc

So far that is where the out breaks have come from-- people sneaking infected chickens out of the quarantine zone.

All of those that were infected would be dead too. It in universally fatal to chickens.

Well I feel terrible. I lost 2 babies. :hit
They somehow managed to squeeze through the cage. I set a live one on the outside and it struggled to get back in. I have fortified it better. I'm kicking myself for not checking on them later into the night.:hit

Dang it Nunny. :hugs

They get through amazingly small spaces. :(

I am glad she is a good mommy.

Can you zip tie some cardboard around the cage to keep others from wandering off?
Just 4" high should do it.

I fortified it better. I’ll be checking them more frequently too. I was trying not to disturb them yesterday so mamma and fuzzies could bond.

We had one Dachshund that never learned about bees. He would chase and eat them. 3-4 times a summer he would come inside looking deformed from being stung.
Oh my!!!!

Oh no!!! I am so sorry about the babies!!! I am so sad for you.
Glad T1 is feeling better. I'm not sure I'll ever forget the wasp sting I took to the palm. My hand hurt for a good week.
Excellent news that someone else is eating! (No name to avoid the jinx) Hopefully she keeps it up. I always tell mine "you can hate me when you feel better"
Off to check on mamma and the littles. It's raining so I'm waiting to open the coop. Dummies stand in the rain and get soaked. Then shake off inside. View attachment 1745048
I remember 2 stings. A yellow jacket in a drink can that stung me in the mouth and a wasp that flew into the bend of my arm as I was about to go down the water slide.

Henny gave the food a few pecks this morning. She is not eating enough though. I won’t be able to check in her until later and undecided if I need to force feed her or let her eat what she will.

Y’all have a good Saturday. It is cold, windy and wet here today!!!
