So, forgive my poor memory, but which Squatchers (if any) have bantams? DH has confessed to wanting a flock of tiny chickies. Anything special I should know about bantam care?!

I have bantam cochins.
Mine have done well in hot and cold weather. In fact they are the oldest of my birds! Bitty is almost 11 and Smudge is 10.

Any particular breed he has in mind?

We can begin at the beginning.....
When they are very young many times regular chick crumble is to big for them. I crush it up more with my rolling pin for the first 2 weeks.

Some breeds do better with temp swings than others. Serama, Japanese, and a few others require help in cold climates.

He loves feather footed breeds. We were think Cochins for sure. Maybe some brahmas or d’uccles. If we get a male, I want an OEGB cockerel.

Great tip about food. Hadn’t considered that.

We are not as cold here as you are, but because we are on the river, in a valley bottom, in a desert, we get really big day to night swings that would probably be challenging for some birds.

Cochins are a hoot! My favorite actually.

I am not as familiar with the D'uccles. The Brahma and cochins will handle the day night swings just fine.

Plan on dealing with broody butts. Oh and getting sexed bantams is a challenge at best. Plan on there being males.

Keep a watch on Ideal hatchery for specials.....they run some crazy good sales....once hatching season gets rolling.

I do. If you want silkies or seramas, they need to be kept warm in winter. I have silkies, Mille Fleur D'uccles, and bantam cochins.

Gotcha. Will Add another broody breaker to my list.

Cackle and Purely Poultry have a couple breeds of sexed bantams. But I am still prepared for oops boys. The market here is pretty decent if I need to rehome.
