Official Squatch Watchers

The trash can heater I made worked well. Even if my article got deleted because people thought I was poisoning the birds. 3 oil lamps in a metal trash can with vent holes and sand in the bottom. The birds would stand on or near it when they were cold.

Weather here is supposed to get nasty in the next few days. Currently 18° out feels like 12° but the coops are all above 20°. Predictions of 6" -12" of the white stuff by Tues afternoon. Two bands comming through so hopefully I get a break in the weather while I have to drive.
I did get new tires so that makes me feel better. But I absolutely hate driving in snow. I grew up here. Always drove in snow. But as I've gotten older my anxiety while driving in it has gone up. Haven't been in an accident in the snow but UUGGGHHH. Temps for Tues look the worst so far. High of 18° low of 3°.

I wear nitrile gloves outside. I need the dexterity of no gloves but no gloves means I lose the dexterity to frozen fingers instead. Doing heavy work in them my hands will sweat but general feeding and watering I prefer those to thick gloves. The other trick is thin cheap gloves with nitrile on top. That way the gloves are waterproof but thin enough you can use your hands.

I had 5 odd losses in the last 2 weeks or so.

One of my little bantam cochins was just dead in the coop. She was full of fat.

Those are all her intestinal organs. I could hardly find her gizzard.

Her gizzard is in my left hand and her intestines were even surrounded in fat.

She wasn't that old. 3. Her heart and everything was just covered in fat. It was so weird.

Then I lost an EE girl. She was full of pine shavings she had eaten. And was very green inside.
Her stomach was bloated and a very funny texture.

That's not grass! My grass isn't even that green.

Next was my little Serama rooster. I had brought all of them into the garage when he started to show signs of not feeling well. The girls were all acting completely normal but he didn't seem right. I wormed them. He was still off. Then I found lice on him. Tried Ivermectin cause its so cold. Nope. He still had bugs so I brought in the big guns and Elector PSP everyone. Girls didn't have any but got treated anyway. Then they beat him up. Never had a problem before but they beat him up good. So he lived in the laundry room with Merida for about 2 weeks. He seemed OK. Bugs were gone. He was eating and pooping fine. Then I found him dead. Heart failure.

I've never seen so much fluid around a heart.

Last where 2 silkie grow outs in the same day. They had something in their trachea. No outward signs of illness.

So today I cleaned all the coops. Made sure all the feeders and waters were good and checked a few other throats for good measure. Nothing.

In happy news. I gained 6.View attachment 2530513
I had put serama eggs in the incubator and only 6 were fertilized. All 6 hatched! But we are going to be on Maury Povich in the near future. 3 of these babies have a silkie for a dad. Extra toes and feathered feet gave him away. 🤣
They are adorable nonetheless and I'm actually hoping for a boy for once. They are just so darn little. Generally I refer to them as "tiny floofs."
They are brooding in my living room. I had to wrap the crate in brown paper so they didn't fall out the openings. They are using peanut butter jar lids for dishes.View attachment 2530514
By attitude alone I'm guessing this one is a boy.

Seramas don't have beards either.

So crazy as usual around here. I'll end this novel and try and get some sleep.

Good morning to you all reading this. Good night Anansi.
Sorry for your losses

Good morning everybody :frow

@FlyingNunFarm, if you still have the article could you pm it to me? I’m always out for learning something new. I didnt see the spoiler pics either. The spoilers opened up with your text but links that didnt “allow”me to see the pictures. Sorry for your losses ☹️. Those chickies are too adorable 🥰

I’m trying to use up my yarn stash for the express purpose of refreshing it 🤣
The strings will have beads on them. As soon as I find them. I dont want to buy more stuff until I clear out more stuff first.
