Just popping in to say hi! Hope everybody is doing well. My oldest daughter graduated from college last month and both kids are home for the summer with their cats. It's a very tight squeeze in our small two bedroom apartments. Attempting to house hunt but these prices are ridiculous. We've only got five chickens left and have no plans of replacing them. One of them is currently battling some kind of infection. I ended up getting some antibiotics online that are marketed for fish because the vet took so long getting back to us the last time. It seems to be working and she is improving but these morning nights medications are exhausting. Still getting a few eggs per week from our 8-year-old hens. Right now we're just preparing for this heat wave that is headed our way. Actually logged in to see if anybody could tell me if I had the fan in my chicken coop pointing the wrong way or not. It's going to be a rough few days. I hope everybody stays cool this coming week!

For the fan to last longer, supply outside air, blowing into the coop. Exhaust, blowing out, would be nice but the dust on a inexpensive fan trashes the fan motor.
The commercial poultry houses have sealed motors on their exhaust fans because of the dust they suck up from the poultry.

Hopefully you'll find something soon.
I have a hen from 2017 that decided to go broody for the first time yesterday

Oh good. That means I have it going the right way. I always figured it was better to have it blowing in because of the air might actually blow and move around them. It was so hard today I feel so bad. I'm going to throw some watermelon rind out to them tomorrow morning and put a frozen water bottle in the waterer. I'm going to take a can of corn and mix it with some water and make a nice little ice block for them for Tuesday.

Are you going to let your hen hatch eggs? We only ever had 1 go broody and that was when she was a year old. It was a cool experience but never had a chance to do it again.

What is it like where you all are? In Northeast Ohio it's 72° overnight tonight, and tomorrow (Monday) it will be 95. It looks like we're not supposed to be getting rain until Wednesday which they moved up because it wasn't supposed to start until Saturday. I put an ac unit in the kids' room bc they don't process heat well. First time since we moved here 13 years ago that we needed ac.

Yes I let them try. They are mostly meat mutts and tend to break the eggs.
So far 5 chicken hens have given up without hatching anything. One hatch 3 but I found 1 chick dead a couple days later. I'm suspicious she accidentally while scratching but not sure. Another hatched 1. Another adopted 3 CX someone gave me. 3 more broody in the same coop and 2 more in 2 different coops. I have 4 coops.
2 turkeys hatched 5 Poults each in 2 different coops and 2 others hatch one poult one also hatched 4 chicks. Another turkey hatched 3 chicks and adopted 4 CX.
There's a turkey out in the weeds somewhere with a nest. Not to hopefully on her with the coyotes.
I think that's everyone.
So far
10 chicks
7 CX
12 poults

Thank you! I'll check it out. Idk why it never tells me when there's been a response. I need to check my settings.
Did your broody hatch any eggs? I always wondered about the bigger birds hatching wo breaking eggs. Obviously it works but seems liked they break some. Sounds like the turkey business is booming. Are you going to keep them or sell them for processing?
We had a bunny build a nest by the chicken's dusting spot a while back. 2 babies weren't thriving & the mom killed 2 of them. 1 was still alive when we found it, but didn't make it. There's been a bunch of babies in the yard lately. I keep hoping one will let me pet it.
My dad saw a fisher or a mink recently. I moved trail cams around but haven't seen anything.

A turkey hatched 4 around the same time in the poultry yard. I didn't take any pictures. She kept losing them so I gave them to another turkey brooding in a coop who's hatched failed but was a good mother last year.

The larger chickens have a terrible hatch rate because they break the eggs. I used to give them incubated eggs and chicks.
